Review

There are times when an oft-repeated story gets a major push thanks to taut storytelling. But there are also instances when an interesting story loses its sheen due to inept handling.

Padam Kumar's SUPARI belongs to the second category!

Easy money was what Aryan [Uday Chopra] Papad [Rahul Dev], Chicken [Purab Kohli] and Mushy [Akash Saigal] wanted. And the one person who showed them the easiest way to make all their dreams come true was Mamta Sekhri [Nandita Das].

Aryan and his friends place a heavy sum of money on a bet. And lose. It was money they didn't have in the first place. A hapless Aryan turns to Pandit, the 'paanwallah' who had helped them place the bet. Enters Mamta Sekhri at this juncture.

The mysterious Mamta makes a deep impact on Aryan. She offers him a gun and a photograph for a contract murder (supari). Thus begins the journey of their transformation and a step towards realisation of their dreams.

The boys begin to enjoy the power. Misusing it becomes easy till Mamta tightens the strings. Aryan loses his best friend Chicken. Dilnawaz [Nauheed Cyrusi], Aryan's girlfriend, gets shot by the rival gang's bullet that was actually meant for him.

Now Aryan wants to get out of it and the only person who can help him with that is Mamta. Aryan's guilt of putting his friends into this whole mess, which they can't get out of or don't want to get out of, drives the film to its climax.

Although a number of films on the darker side of society [underworld] have been attempted in the past, this one tackles an angle that hasn't been attempted before how a bunch of college students get lured to the world of crime.

But, unfortunately, the film does not come across as a hard-hitting statement mainly because

One, the screenplay has several loose ends and a few pertinent questions are left unanswered.

Two, director Padam Kumar's storytelling lacks the punch to keep the viewer on tenterhooks, so vital for this genre.

The biggest culprit here is its faulty screenplay. It starts off pretty well, but as it progresess, it runs out of fuel.

To start with, the viewer gets an impression that the law of the jungle prevails in the city, with bullets flying left, right and centre, with everyone on a killing spree. The four youngsters go on a killing spree in broad daylight in streets, hospital, market there is complete lawlessness, with no sign of a cop anywhere. The law and order situation is worse in this city than anywhere in the world, seems like!

The second fault lies in the faulty characterisations. For instance, Nandita Das is supposed to be a don, but she lacks the ruthlessness that the character demands? Also, why does she develop a soft spot for Uday Chopra, remains a mystery. Even her relationship with Irrfan Khan is not too well defined.

Even in the end, when Nandita realises that Uday has come to eliminate her, why does she provoke him against her own self? And why does she surrender herself so easily? That only adds to the confusion.

The love angle between Uday Chopra Nauheed Cyrusi and Rahul Dev Nisha Arora has been given a raw deal by the writers [Padam Kumar, Mushtaq Sheikh, Anuradha Tiwari]. There should've been some tender moments between the lovers so as to depict the more humane side of the boys.

Besides, the screenplay leaves a few things unexplained, like

* What is the relevance of the pregnant woman in the film?
* How do the boys agree instantly to kill people to clear off the debt? Under normal circumstances, a lot of thought would go into it if anyone were to take such an extreme step.
* Timid-natured Purab believes in the right path, he's the guy with a conscience, but why does he agree to become a partner in crime is equally confusing.

The only redeeming aspect is a bunch of well-executed sequences, like Purab Kohli eliminating himself or a bullet hitting Nauheed. But a handful of scenes cannot undo the harm inflicted by a slipshod screenplay.

Director Padam Kumar tries hard to make a statement that crime doesn't pay and that those who live by the gun, die by the gun, but the film gets too talk-heavy at places and also gives an impression of preaching. In the climax as well, there's very heavy sermonising.

Although there's not much scope for music in a film like this, the two songs [Vishal Shekhar] 'Tere Ishq Mein' and 'Chand Chahiye' stand out. The picturisation of the latter is simply fantastic.

Dialogue Sutapa Sikdar; addl. dialogue: Atul Sabharwal] are excellent. Action [Ram Shetty] gives the feeling of seen-it-before. There's nothing novel about it.

Uday Chopra does a decent job. Rahul Dev doesn't look like a college student. Yet, he does emote well. Purab Kohli is a complete natural. Akash Saigal is a surprise, belting out a performance that's bound to be noticed.

Nandita Das conveys a lot through her expressive eyes and that's where she scores. Her get-up is equally impressive. Nauheed Cyrusi and Nisha Arora fail to impress. Irrfan Khan is terribly wasted. Any lesser actor could've enacted the role of a sidekick.

On the whole, SUPARI does not deliver what one expects from it. When compared to films of this genre [SATYA, VAASTAV, COMPANY], SUPARI pales considerably.

Download Tehzeeb Songs

Review

Khalid Mohamed attempts a woman-oriented flick again. And like his earlier films [as writer, as director], TEHZEEB, his latest flick, also looks at relationships.

Tehzeeb [Urmila Matondkar] has nursed a grudge against her mother Rukhsana [Shabana Azmi] since her childhood.

Rukhsana, a playback singer, is a celebrity in her own right. Tehzeeb suspects her to be the cause of the sudden death of her father, Anwar [Rishi Kapoor]. Rukhsana was even tried in court for murder, but was declared not guilty.

Much against her mother's wishes, Tehzeeb marries a writer, Salim [Arjun Rampal], and settles down with him at a hill station far away from the city. Tehzeeb's mentally challenged younger sister Nazneen [Dia Mirza] also lives with them.

Rukhsana decides to visit her daughter and son-in-law for a few days. Everything goes fine initially, but the tension between them resurfaces eventually.

An interesting story. But is it original? Nope!

A filtered version of Ingmar Bergman's 1978 Swedish flick HOSTSONATEN [AUTUMN SONATA], which itself was loosely based on Ingmar's youth, a similar story was also attempted by Rituparno Ghosh in UNISHE APRIL [Bengali; 1994; starring Aparna Sen, Debashree Roy].

With an ensemble star cast and a fantastic technical team [writer-director Khalid Mohamed, cinematographer Santosh Sivan, music composer A.R. Rahman, dialogue writer Javed Siddiqui, art director Sharmishta Roy, sound recordist Rakesh Ranjan], one expects TEHZEEB to be a cut above the rest.

TEHZEEB tells the story of a broken relationship between a mother and daughter, and appeals to a degree. Not in totality

The uppers

  • The dramatic sequences between Shabana and Urmila are the best part of the enterprise. The sequences when the ladies confront and spit venom at each other keeps the viewer's interest alive. The confrontations are not just well penned, but equally well emoted.

  • Arjun Rampal balances the goings-on beautifully. Although his role is not as powerful as Shabana or Urmila's, the easy-going attitude his character reflects injects that certain sheen to the enterprise.

  • The performances are of a high order. Actually, the film rests on three shoulders Shabana, Urmila and Arjun.

  • But the film is not without its share of downers

  • The screenplay could've been more cohesive. The film tends to drag at places, it even tends to get boring after a point. That's because, after the ladies have fought, you expect the tension to build up further, but nothing really happens. They are back to being normal, but rake up old issues after a couple of minutes, yet again.

  • There are several unwanted sequences and tracks in the film. For instance, Urmila doing a take-off on Shammi Kapoor, Zeenat Aman, Sridevi and Mehmood just doesn't appeal. It simply falls flat. The same goes for the Arjun Rampal Diana Hayden track, this could've easily been avoided. Also, the reason that prompts Diana to behave lecherous seems ridiculous. Even Satish Kaushik and Namrata Shirodkar seem forced in the goings-on.

  • A.R. Rahman's music is plain mediocre. Let's put it this way knowing the talent Rahman possesses and the output he is capable of delivering, the music lacks that Rahman trademark. Although a couple of songs are tuneful, a few of them have been injected in the screenplay without any valid reason whatsoever. Besides, the music is in keeping with the mood of the film, but it holds scant appeal for the youth of today.

  • But the biggest drawback is its climax. The culmination to the story and the note on which the film ends [a song begins abruptly!] mars the impact of the film completely.

  • Director Khalid Mohamed has handled several individualistic sequences with flourish [especially the mother-daughter confrontations], but is letdown by his own script. Now, this is all the more surprising since the writer had a classic like AUTUMN SONATA to fall back upon if at all he needed reference points! Also, he has treated the subject in such a manner that it will find flavour with a select few only.

Santosh Sivan's cinematography is outstanding. Dialogues [Javed Siddiqui] are realistic.

TEHZEEB belongs to Shabana Azmi and Urmila Matondkar jointly. It's a delight watching Shabana on the big screen after a hiatus. This performance reaffirms the fact that there's none to match this actor when it comes to histrionics.

Urmila tends to go overboard at times, but is brilliant in a few sequences. Like the one in the hospital or prior to that, when she confronts her mother, who in turn slaps her her expressions are just perfect!

Arjun Rampal is a revelation. The actor manages to create a strong impact despite this being a woman-oriented theme. His fan-following is bound to multiply, post- TEHZEEB.

Dia Mirza hams throughout. However, the disco-kind-of-a-number she breaks into [!!!] is simply ridiculous and can easily be deleted. Rishi Kapoor does his part mechanically. Diana Hayden makes a terrible debut. Her accent only worsens things. Rekha Rao is adequate.

On the whole, TEHZEEB lacks the power to captivate, mesmerise and enthral the viewer, courtesy a weak script. At the box-office, the film caters to a niche audience the intelligentsia/gentry/pseudo critics which might appreciate it, but an overall acceptance is ruled out. The business prospects at select multiplexes of metros [not all the multiplexes] will be better, but that's not saying much!

    Cast

    Shabana Azmi...... Rukhsana Jamal
    Urmila Matondkar...... Tehzeeb Mirza
    Arjun Rampal...... Salim Mirza
    Dia Mirza...... Nazneen Jamal
Rishi Kapoor...... Anwar Jamal (Special Appearance)
    Namrata Shirodkar...... Aloka
    Satish Kaushik...... Kamal Choksi

Waisa Bhi Hota Hai Part II is a 2003 Indian movie starring Arshad Warsi, is one of the few cult movies of Bollywood. Review

The year 2003 has witnessed several new directors exploding on the Hindi screen. A few made an impact, while others vanished into thin air, going completely unnoticed.

ZAMEEN, directed by debutante Rohit Shetty, catches you unaware

For, the film tackles an oft-repeated issue the sensitive Indo-Pak relations that has been recycled on the Hindi screen time and again. So, how is ZAMEEN different?

Also, depicting a real-life incident [Indian Airlines' hijack to Kandahar] on celluloid and getting the chronology of events right is easier said than done, more so for a first-time director. You have to tread cautiously. One wrong move, the impact could boomerang.

Handling a mammoth star cast and giving the film a larger-than-life look can prove to be an arduous task.

Rohit Shetty, who makes his debut as director with this film, passes in all three sections. With distinction marks at that!

Col. Ranvir [Ajay Devgan] captures the mastermind of Al Tahir organisation Baba Zaheer [Mukesh Tiwari].

Six months later, during a fierce skirmish at the Indo-Pak border, four terrorists cross over to India. Ranvir takes over the case and tries to trace these four men, their identities, their motive, their destination, their plan.

Meanwhile, in Mumbai, A.C.P. Jai [Abhishek Bachchan] is tracking a gang that is involved in trafficking arms into the city. But what he uncovers opens a Pandora's Box.

Ranvir arrives in Mumbai to track down these men and quash their mission. But Jai and he are too late the terrorists successfully hijack an Indian Airways' aircraft and fly to P.O.K.

Although one has witnessed innumerable films that tackled terrorism [coincidentally, Ajay Devgan's recent starrers QAYAMAT and PARWANA also tackled the issue of terrorism!], ZAMEEN is a cut above the ordinary in terms of scripting and execution. The film looks at the hijack of an Indian aircraft, with passengers on board, and how the army and police join hands to find a solution to the crisis.

Besides delving into the hijack issue in the second half of the film, the chronology of events right from the arrest of a terrorist in the valley to the militants crossing the L.O.C. to the crisis that ensues have been simplified for the common man to decipher. References to Akshardham temple and the attack on the Indian Parliament only make the goings-on germane, topical and identifiable.

The first half is truly riveting. The arrest of the militant [Mukesh Tiwari] in the valley, Abhishek chasing Sanjay Mishra in broad daylight on a busy road and the chase between the militants and the police just before the hijack, leave you spellbound.

There's no denying that the action sequences [Jai Singh] are breathtaking, but the way director Rohit Shetty has juxtaposed them in the script is what deserves to be lauded. Besides, the film moves on a singular track throughout there're no cheap thrills, no forced comedy, no running around trees.

The film looks at the terrorism issue with as much seriousness as the common man experiences it in reality.

Although the second half does take its inspiration from the Harrison Ford flick AIR FORCE ONE [1997] and the Kandahar episode, making the aircraft land in P.O.K. builds up the curiosity of the viewer.

The second half tends to get slow, but it gathers momentum when an Indian delegation lands in P.O.K. to mediate with the militants. From thereon, right till the finale, the film succeeds in keeping the viewer mesmerised.

Director Rohit Shetty handles the dramatic sequences with ?n and the pace at which the story moves ahead is just right. Besides, there's consistency in his work throughout the film. The confrontations between Ajay and Abhishek and also between Ajay and Mukesh Tiwari in the pre-climax are proof that the director knows his job very well.

Writer Suparn Verma deserves kudos for giving that extra sheen to the enterprise with his deft writing. Although a number of films have depicted terrorism/militancy in the past, ZAMEEN depicts an incident [Kandahar episode] that is still fresh in the minds of the Indians without commercialising the issue. This is Suparn's finest work to date!

Himesh Reshammiya's music is hummable. The film has three songs in all [the title track picturised on singers Shaan and K.K., 'Ek Simple Si Coffee' and 'Dilli Ki Sardi'] and all three fit in the goings-on beautifully. 'Dilli Ki Sardi' is a chartbuster and is bound to be lapped up by the masses in a big way.

Dialogues [Javed Siddiqui] are simply brilliant and a major asset to the film. The war of words between Ajay and Mukesh Tiwari in the pre-climax can easily be singled out. Even otherwise, Siddiqui's lines are inkeeping with the mood of the film.

Aseem Bajaj's cinematography is fantastic. The camera movements at several places deserve a special mention. Action sequences, as mentioned earlier, will keep the viewers spellbound. Editing [Bunty Nagi] is efficient.

Ajay Devgan towers above one and all, delivering a performance that's truly awe-inspiring. The actor seems to be accepting challenges and living up to the high expectations that the viewer has from him. The actor of calibre adds yet another feather to his well-decorated cap with this performance.

Abhishek Bachchan is extremely efficient, conveying various emotions, mainly pathos, through his eyes. He is remarkable all through. Cast in a role that has the angry-young-man shades, the actor gives his best shot and comes up with a winning performance.

Bipasha Basu doesn't get much scope, but she registers a strong impact nevertheless. Pankaj Dheer is outstanding, especially in the sequence when he confronts the terrorist. Mukesh Tiwari is first-rate yet again. D. Santosh, Sanjay Mishra and Manish Khanna lend adequate support.

On the whole, ZAMEEN is a winner all the way. The film has all it takes to appeal to the cinegoers and should prove a success story in days to come. Class 'A'.

Aan: Men At Work is a 2004 Bollywood film directed by Madhur Bhandarkar. The movie is about the life of a police officer fighting crime constantly.

    Synopsis

Crime is at its highest peak in Mumbai with it split in three ways. Walia (Jackie Shroff) has one-third, Manik Rao (Manoj Joshi) has one-third and Roshni (Raveena Tandon) has a third of the Mumbai territory. The crime rate rises with more smuggling, trading and illegal activities soaring. Meanwhile, the CBI work constantly to stop this.

Inspector Vikram (Shatrughan Sinha) is a failure of a police in life and tends to stick with the easy way. Appa (Suniel Shetty) is an encounter specialist who goes after the henchmen instead of the bosses, he has a wife Janki (Preety Jhangiani) with whom they have a son. Const. Dhoom is a Bollywood film, produced by Yash Raj Films Aditya Chopra (son of Yash Chopra) and released in 2004. Based loosely on the 1998 French film Taxi, 1991 Hollywood film Point Break, and 2004 Hollywood film Torque, it was one of the biggest hits of 2004 in India, and brought in a new genre of movies akin to the fast paced motorcycle-robbery dramas. Dhoom 2, its sequel was released on November 24, 2006 in India and on November 23, 2006 in the UK, USA, and the UAE.

    Synopsis

The story starts in the streets of Mumbai, where a gang of high-speed motorcyclists (riding bikes like the Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa) are robbing banks and money-vans and disappearing into thin air - or rather into pizza delivery boys - before anyone can say "thief".

ACP Jai Dixit, (Abhishek Bachchan) a no-nonsense cop is called on the case. He seeks the help of a scatterbrained, clownish downtown racer named Ali (Uday Chopra) and devises a trap to catch the thieves, but fails. Kabir (John Abraham) the leader of the gang, eventually taunts Dixit by saying that he couldn't catch Kabir even if he were right in front of him. He is proved correct and the failure of Dixit seemingly leads to the breakup of his partnership with Ali.

Kabir then lures Ali into his gang to replace Rohit, the gang member who was killed by Jai. Meanwhile, Jai is making out with his wife, Sweety (Rimi Sen). Ali also falls in love with Sheena (Esha Deol), another gang member. The gang later goes to Goa to perform one last big heist before disbanding forever. Kabir now sets his eyes on the biggest casino in all of India. Kabir and his gang swiftly rob the casino on New Year's Eve, but soon, they realize that Jai has planned them right into a trap. In the end, Kabir rides his bike off of a cliff as Ali and Jai look on. It is not clear if Kabir dies or if he manages to escape.

    Review

A genre like the one attempted in GAYAB has not been witnessed with rapid regularity in Hindi films. Of course, there has been MR. X IN BOMBAY, MR. INDIA and the two desi versions of GHOST, MAA and PYAAR KA SAAYA, in the past.

    And now GAYAB.

But novel ideas don't necessarily develop into path-breaking films. GAYAB has its share of engrossing moments, but they're few and far between. Unlike MR. INDIA, which appealed from age group 6 to 60, GAYAB neither completely satiates the kids, nor those looking for wholesome entertainment.

Somewhere, as it progresses, the screenplay gets gayab and what you carry home are a handful of deftly executed sequences. But a handful of high-quality scenes are no compensation in a 2-hour flick!

Let's just say, GAYAB was ripe with potential that succumbed completely to trite and tepid Bollywood convention.

Vishnu Prasad [Tusshar Kapoor] is a loser in life. He lacks self-confidence and the attitude to lead a normal life.

Having an unmatched knack of attracting problems, his life doesn't get any easier, courtesy a nagging mother [Rasika Joshi], who takes pride in beating up Vishu given the slightest opportunity.

His father [Raghuveer Yadav], a henpecked husband, is petrified to raise a voice, let alone take his side. Mohini [Antra Mali], the love of Vishnu's life, doesn't even know his existence and her boyfriend [Raman Trikha] wants to break his bones.

Disappointed and frustrated with life, he prays to God to make him gayab And the wish is granted!

An original piece of work? Nope! Flashes of THE INVISIBLE MAN [1933] and the more recent HOLLOW MAN [2000] cross your mind as you watch GAYAB. Unfortunately, GAYAB is an interesting idea gone haywire. When stretched into a 2-hour film, it just doesn't hold.

GAYAB has its moments of glory. And these moments come in the initial reels itself. Depicting the protagonist as a loser at the very start of the film was the proper way to set in motion the story. The turning point in the tale, when Vishnu becomes invisible, though not having a strong impact, still keeps the viewer's interest alive.

But the film goes haywire in the latter part. The focus suddenly shifts to the one-sided romance and how Vishnu wants to possess the girl. Nothing wrong with that, but the way screenplay writers Kona Venkat and Prawaal Raman go about it makes you only realize that a sound idea can go awry with amateurish writing.

Whatever little impression the film makes in the first half, it blows it away in the post-interval portions. The thrill and excitement associated with an invisible man movie is completely missing in this half. If the effort was to make you laugh, sorry, it doesn't. If the endeavour was to pull your heartstrings, it doesn't either.

The car-bike chase in the second half and to an extent the scene when Tusshar and Antra meet in a secluded mill is worthy of mention. But the climax is a complete letdown from the writing point of view. Antra's sudden change of heart [towards Tusshar] is difficult to absorb. Even Tusshar surrendering himself to the law [he continues to be invisible till the very end!] looks plain ridiculous. Frankly, one does miss some surreal scenes and a nail-biting finale.

Another drawback of the film is its music [Ajay Atul, Amar Mohile] and the placement of songs. In fact, the songs only seem like an excuse for a generous display of skin show, which is only a forced ingredient in a film like this.

Director Prawaal Raman has yet to grasp the art of writing the screenplay and giving it an interesting form, thereby mesmerizing the viewer for the next two hours. In fact, GAYAB also looks like a 2-hour version of one of the six stories of DARNA MANA HAI, featuring Aftab Shivdasani and Isha Koppikar. Besides, it lacks terror and suspense - so vital in a film like this!

Cinematography [Pietro Zuercher] is consistent. Special effects [Huzefa Lokhandwala] are decent at times, but tacky at most places. Even otherwise, great special effects do not a great movie make.

Tusshar looks the character he has been assigned to portray and he does it well. Antra Mali just doesn't deliver. Raman Trikha is adequate. Govind Namdeo and Raghuveer Yadav are as usual. Rasika Joshi tends to go overboard at times, but stands out due to her characterization.

On the whole, GAYAB is strong on hype, but weak in content. The USP of the film is the invisible factor in the story, but an amateur screenplay ruins the show. At the box-office, GAYAB might attract the multiplex audience for a day or two thanks to its aggressive promotion, but after the word is out, the drop in its collections will be inevitable. Business in Mumbai should prove to be slightly better, but in most circuits it will face an uphill task!

His feeble attempts at flirting go nowhere, but when they have a stopover in Amsterdam, she agrees to spend a few hours exploring the city with him. Karan quickly learns he has little in common with the feisty but proper Rhea, but he won't give up. He ends their contentious time together with an unwelcome kiss. Rhea is outraged and storms off, but Karan insists they'll meet again. And months later in New York, he spots her in the park, and she causes a scene with his girlfriend, which ends in the break-up between Karan and his current girlfriend. Karan and Rhea don't see each other again

Now three years later, when Karan is helping his mother plan a wedding that turns out to be Rhea's. Rhea is marrying Sameer (Abhishek Bachchan). They bicker again, but this time, they part on good terms. Years later in Paris, Karan is visiting his father (Rishi Kapoor), when he runs into Rhea again. He learns from Rhea's mother (Kiron Kher) that Sameer has died in a car crash, and he sets out to help her reclaim her positive outlook on life. Sensing that she needs to be with a straight-laced, "boring guy", he conspires with Rhea's mother to fix her up with his shy best friend, Mihir (Jimmy Shergill). Things don't go as planned, and Karan and Rhea find themselves forced to confront their feelings for each other. They spend a night together (though in Indian releases, this scene was cut) and, suspecting they have ruined their relationship forever, Karan leaves Rhea, but later realizes his mistake and tries to find her, but she has disappeared.

    Download Kismat Songs

    Review

First things first How does one describe KISMAT? Does it have a path-breaking story? Or ground-breaking technique? Nah! Nothing of that sort!

KISMAT relies on the same old formulaic stuff the cinegoer has witnessed since time immemorial. Of course, it's presented in a new avatar. Simply put, it's an apt case of old wine in new bottle!

The story revolves around an orphan, Tony [Bobby Deol]. To survive in the concrete jungle, Tony learns to live by his wit and courage. Right from petty theft to loan recovery, Tony does everything for a price.

After earning a handsome packet in a bout where he had to risk his life, Tony visits a musical show to relax. But he is woken up from his slumber by the singer on the stage, Sapna [Priyanka Chopra].

It's love at first sight for Tony. But making the dream come true seems impossible. Tony is a hoodlum, while Sapna is a rising star. In fact, Sapna's parents have already fixed up her marriage to a boy from an affluent family [Amit Behl].

A heartbroken Tony decides to match up in status and ask for Sapna's hand from her family.

Around this time, Tony gets an offer to coerce a government officer into signing some papers. The money seems good and the work looks easy. Tony goes straight to Dr. Gosain's office [Mohan Joshi] and threatens to kill his family if Gosain doesn't sign on the dotted line.

Tony is unaware that Dr. Gosain is Sapna's father and his signature would allow the corrupt businessman, Raj Mallya [Kabir Bedi], to release his spurious drugs in the market. These drugs would eventually kill hundreds of innocent and get Dr. Gosain convicted for life and his family ostracised from the society.

Tony realises that he has committed a blunder. Sapna's father is put behind bars and her mother [Smita Jaykar] commits suicide. Tony has to undo the harm

There's no denying that the story of KISMAT is as old as the hills. In fact, it won't be wrong to state that while Bollywood is undergoing a major revolution, with diverse subjects being attempted, writers Robin Bhatt and Sutanu Gupta seem to be finding it difficult to shed off the cinema of 1980s/1990s.

KISMAT is anything but novel. The story abounds in clich? the sequence of events are outright predictable, so much so that the viewer can actually guess [predict?] what the next sequence would be like there's a song coming up after every 20 minutes the cars explode on highways like gas-balloons

Despite the predictable nature, the film does have its moments. A few well crafted sequences do catch your attention, like the initial portions between Bobby and Priyanka and some vibrant stunts.

Though handicapped by a routine story, director Guddu Dhanoa makes an earnest effort to keep the show going. While the first half is quite interesting, he runs out of steam in the second half. For, the pace picks up and drops at an alarming regularity in this half.

While the pre-climax is interesting when Kabir Bedi tortures Bobby the end seems like a hurried job. Making the villain accept his misdeeds so easily is difficult to digest.

Anand Raaj Anand's music is an asset. And the picturisation of the songs only elevate the musical score. From the lot, 'Mahi Mahi Mahi' and 'Sajna Se Milne Jaana' can easily be singled out for their racy tunes. Priyanka's dances in these two numbers also deserve immense praise.

Sripad Natu's cinematography is upbeat. Action sequences are very well executed. In fact, a few stunts will gel well with the front-benchers especially.

After a hiatus of almost a year, Bobby Deol re-emerges with a likeable performance. He seems to be looking more comfortable in angry young man roles. One would've expect the heroine to look like a decorative item in a film like this, but Priyanka Chopra gets ample scope to display histrionics and she carries off her part with conviction.

The pack of villains Kabir Bedi and Shahbaaz Khan don't get much scope really. Kabir Bedi is suave as ever, conveying so much through his eyes. Shahbaaz Khan is okay. Ashish Vidyarthi is efficient. Mohan Joshi is adequate. Smita Jaykar is fair. Sanjay Narvekar [Bobby Deol's friend] is first-rate.

On the whole, KISMAT is a predictable fare that holds appeal for front-benchers mainly. For the gentry and the multiplex audiences, it has precious little to offer. However, its reasonable price should prove advantageous for its distributors.

    Download Krishna Cottage Songs

    Review

When you saunter into a cinema hall to watch a horror flick, you anticipate a riveting story with chills and thrills to scare the daylights out of you.

KRISHNA COTTAGE, directed by debutante Santram Verma, has its share of chills that occasionally shock you, but how one wishes the writers would've come up with an effective, atmospheric and coherent horror film.

However, as far as technique is concerned, KRISHNA COTTAGE succeeds. Some of it doesn't make sense logically speaking, but it's so well executed in terms of visual style that the director and his crew have managed to overshadow the writers' numerous gaps of logic.

KRISHNA COTTAGE is set in motion with the launch of a book by an eminent author [Raj Zutshi]. This book is different in the sense that it presents nine-and-a-half stories - the final story has been left incomplete by the author since he couldn't think of an appropriate ending.

Manav [Sohail Khan] and Shanu [Natasha] are studying in the same college. On their engagement day, they happen to meet Disha [Isha Koppikar], a new entrant in their class.

Both Manav and Disha get attracted to each other in their first meeting itself. The same night, during the engagement ceremony, Manav saves Disha from a mishap.

Manav, Disha and their friends [Vrajesh Hirjee, Divya Palat, Hiten Tejwani, Ali Hassan] decide to escort a visibly-shaken Disha to her house. But a flat tyre compels them to take shelter in a secluded cottage in a dilapidated condition, Krishna Cottage.

And then begins a spate of murders... The mystery deepens when Shanu learns of a bizarre truth.

Take the much-acclaimed Hollywood hit THE RING [2002], add a bit of Ramgopal Varma's BHOOT, sprinkle Chetan Anand's KUDRAT, garnish it with some shock-value sequences from Ramsay movies and the recipe for the dish called KRISHNA COTTAGE is ready!

While THE RING and BHOOT were embellished with a taut script and attention-grabbing technique [cinematography, sound quality, background music] to make the viewer bite his nails, KRISHNA COTTAGE has to remain content with some well executed sequences and special effects.

Of course, the film does boast of eerie moments, but they are few and far between. Writers Rajesh Joshi and Abhigyan Jha seem to have run out of fresh ideas while scripting the film. That's the impression you get at the conclusion of the film.

KRISHNA COTTAGE starts off well, but as the story unfolds, the viewer is left with a feeling of d? vu. For instance, the moment the car breaks down and the friends enter a secluded cottage, the viewer is well aware that some eerie incidents will follow next. And that's precisely what happens!

Also, despite the friends getting killed one after the other, there's no sign of a cop or even their parents arriving on the scene to investigate the issue. In fact, one of the friends [Ali Hassan] is brutally murdered within the college premises, but again nothing happens. That's too much of a cinematic liberty!

Furthermore, the script leaves several questions unanswered. In the first place, how does the author know about the spirit [the final unfinished chapter reveals the truth about the spirit] remains a mystery till the finale. The writers of the film have committed the most glaring faux pas here!

Even the end, when the spirit lets go of Sohail Khan so easily, when the fact is that it has waited for 22 years to possess him, looks ridiculous. A better-penned climax would've helped camouflage the defects partially.

KRISHNA COTTAGE is watchable in the second half. The film gathers steam in the post-interval portions when Rati Agnihotri enters the scene [she enacts a role similar to the one essayed by Rekha in BHOOT]. The sequence when she tries to connect with the spirit is expertly executed.

Likewise, a few eerie sequences do succeed in sending a chill down your spine. In fact, the creepy thrills and visceral chills will keep the audiences on their toes. Instances: The two murders in the first half [Divya Palat, Ali Hassan] and also the pre-climax, when flashes from the past races past Sohail's eyes.

Director Santram Verma is a good technician, but his efforts get sidelined thanks to amateurish writing. Verma has executed a couple of sequences deftly and if given a better script, can come up with better results.

Anu Malik's music is a mixed bag. 'Bindaas' is the pick of the lot in terms of its tune as well as its execution. Cinematography is up to the mark. The dark and spooky look is well depicted throughout. The background score [Amar Mohile] deserves special mention for it enhances the impact of several sequences. Special effects [Maya] are top class.

After a smash performance in I - PROUD TO BE AN INDIAN, Sohail Khan disappoints this time around. This one is a relatively bland performance.

Natasha comes across well in the post-interval portions. However, she needs to control herself in sequences that demand outbursts/anger. Isha Koppikar carries off her part with sincerity, not going overboard at all. A confident performance!

Rati Agnihotri looks her part and lends credibility to it. But one fails to understand why she apes Rekha in the film [BHOOT is still fresh in the memory]. Besides, her exit could've been better thought of - it looks too abrupt! Raj Zutshi does well in a brief role. Again, the culmination of his character could've been better thought of.

Amongst friends, Hiten Tejwani is fair. Vrajesh Hirjee is controlled this time around. Divya Palat is alright. Ali Hassan is strictly okay.

On the whole, KRISHNA COTTAGE has its moments, but not enough to enjoy an innings like some of the films belonging to this genre [RAAZ, BHOOT]. At the box-office, an open week [no oppositions!] and the commencement of summer vacations might just go in its favour!

Lakshya is a Hindi movie directed by Farhan Akhtar. It stars Hrithik Roshan, Preity Zinta, Amitabh Bachchan, Om Puri and Boman Irani. Roshan plays the role of Lieutenant (later Acting Captain) Karan Shergill, who leads his team to victory over the Pakistani infiltrators on peak 5179 along the border. It is a fictional story based on the historical events of the 1999 Kargil Conflict. The film was screened at the Marrakech International Film Festival.

    Synopsis

Karan Shergil (Roshan) is a young man who has no actual goal in mind or plans for his future. He represents those urban youth in modern India, who have money but little ambition or purpose in their lives. His father is a businessman; his brother is a successful individual living in America, but Karan is drifting along. His girlfriend, Romi (Zinta), a student activist who espouses fashionable causes out of wellmeaning sincerity, tells him he needs to find a goal in life. When a friend announces he is going to join the Army, Karan applies for the Indian Military Academy as well, and enrolls in the Indian Military Academy despite dissent from his parents.

Karan's first days at the IMA are a disaster. Because he is undisciplined and unused to a spartan existence, he keeps getting into trouble at the academy. Upset, he leaves the academy without permission, sneaking over the wall at Last Post. However, the girl he has been pursuing, Romi, breaks off their relationship because he quit even this attempt at being an adult. His father also expresses displeasure at his action, despite his mother urging him to join the family business. Karan finally comes to terms with his situation and decides to face his demons. He returns to the IMA, takes his punishment, and becomes a focused, disciplined cadet leader, graduating as a cadet officer.

Lt. Karan (the starting rank for all new commissioned officers in the Indian Army) is posted to the 3rd Battalion of the Punjab Regiment, commanded by Col. Sunil Damle (Amitabh Bachchan), and handles his responsibilities well. From an immature teenager to a mature officer, he finally decides the essence of his life or his goal - 'Lakshya'. His Lakshya is now his unit's target - a mountain peak - known to be occupied by the Pakistani Army.

The movie depicts Karans transformation- it shows how the Army, and its disciplined, selfless and spartan existence moulds an impressionable young individual accustomed to a hedonistic lifestyle, into a mature human being who can think and act for himself.

Romi is now engaged to a businessman friend and has, for all intents moved on with her life.

Karan encounters Romi, who is now a war correspondent and has come to the battle zone to cover the conflict, and it becomes clear that Karans responsibilities take precedence over their relationship.

As the conflict develops into a raging war, Colonel Damle is told by his Brigadier that 3 Punjab has 48 hours to achieve its goal of seizing the peak assigned to them, or the unit will be relieved. It is now a matter of regimental "izzat" (pride) that 3 Punjab seize the peak, come what may. Karan & his fellow soldiers skilfully assault the objective, routing the enemy, but not without cost. The unit has several casualties, Karan's friend Akbar, a fellow officer is killed in the clash.

Karan is now assigned to a commando team (ghatak in Indian Army parlance) which is tasked with climbing a tall cliff (mentioned at 800 feet at one point, 1000 feet in another) to flank the Pakistani sangars (rock fortifications) and regain the hill. On the night before the attack, Karan calls his father and the two are reconciled.

The team assaults the objective and seizes it after a realistically filmed assault- with several of the unit falling in the grim, no holds barred, close quarters battle. The survivors then have another task left to them; they have to face determined counter-attacks from the Pakistani regulars who seek to re-take the objective when they realise that the Indians who routed them, are yet to be reinforced. The Indians manage to hold on and repulse the attack.

Karan then moves on to the hill limping to the top of the mountain, unpacking the Indian tricolor Akbar wanted to carry, and plants it on top of the hill, then fires a flare, to the relieved joy of Colonel Damle. The movie ends with Karan marrying Romi.

It has been suggested that significant elements of Karans achievements and character are based on the different exploits of actual Indian soldiers during the Kargil conflict. Overall, the movie follows the Indian movie template of having songs interspersed amongst the narrative, however it was widely praised for its highly nuanced portrayal of a young mans coming of age, while also making a war movie with well directed action content, without resorting to jingoism or hyperbole.

Main Hoon Na is a Hindi Bollywood film written and directed by Farah Khan and produced by Gauri Khan and Shahrukh Khan; it was released on April 30, 2004 and was considered a box-office success.

It mixes the genres of action, teen comedy, family melodrama and Bollywood musical.

    Plot

Main Hoon Na tells the story of Major Ram Prasad Sharma (Shahrukh Khan) and his efforts to foil the terrorist Raghavan (Sunil Shetty). Major Sharma is simultaneously attempting to mend relations with his father's estranged first wife and his half-brother Lakshman; complications ensue.

Raghavan wants to sabotage a military project called Milaap (Unity), a first step towards friendship between India and Pakistan. India will release fifty Pakistanis imprisoned for crossing the border into India -- most of them illiterate villagers who wandered over the border by mistake. Raghavan doesn't want the state of war between India and Pakistan to end; he lost his son in the Indo-Pak wars in Kashmir and cherishes an abiding hatred for Pakistan and all Pakistanis.

First he tries to stop Project Milaap by killing the general in charge, General Bakshi (Kabir Bedi) during a national television interview. This fails, though he does succeed in killing Brigadier Sharma (Naseeruddin Shah), Major Sharma's (Ram's) father.

As the father dies, he tells Ram about his stepmother (Kiron Kher) and half-brother Lakshman (Zayed Khan) and begs Ram to re-establish relations with them, who are to be found at a college town in the Himalayas (Darjeeling). Both brothers should cast their father's ashes into the Ganges.

Raghavan again tries to stop Project Milaap, this time by threatening to kill General Bakshi's daughter Sanjana (Amrita Rao). The General asks Major Sharma to protect Sanjana; Ram pleads that he has family responsibilities. The General points out that, by a strange coincidence, Sanjana attends school in the same town where Lakshman lives, so Ram can protect Sanjana and look for Lakshman at the same time. Ram must go under cover, as Sanjana is estranged from her father and will not accept any military escort.

So Ram pretends to be a college student, returning to college after many years away. He is much older than the other students, who at first make fun of him because of his lack of new-generation styles. He soon proves his worth and becomes a big man on campus.

He finds Lucky Lakshman (later revealed to be his brother), who has failed term thrice, befriends Sanjana, and succeeds in foiling Raghavan. He also falls in love with a beautiful chemistry teacher (Sushmita Sen).

The film is notable for lively music and dance sequences (the director got her start as a choreographer) and for thrilling action scenes featuring Matrix-style slow motion effects -- such as the car-chase sequence involving a flaming cycle rickshaw.

    Download Murder Songs

Murder is a 2004 Bollywood thriller directed by Anurag Basu and written by Mahesh Bhatt. The movie stars Mallika Sherawat in the leading role as a woman wrongfully accused of murdering her ex-boyfriend. The film also stars Emraan Hashmi and Ashmit Patel and is set in Bangkok, Thailand. The movie's soundtrack was created by Anu Malik. This film is a Bollywood remake of the Hollyood movie Unfaithful and the Bollywood movie Hawas and Tezaab - The Acid of Love.

    Review

The Bhatts have, most of the times, opted for subjects that are in sharp contrast to the products churned out in Bollywood. In MURDER, their latest endeavour, Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt look at extra-marital relationships from a realistic point of view.

    But first things first!

  • Is MURDER a mix of UNFAITHFUL and DOUBLE INDEMNITY?

  • Yes, it's inspired by Adrian Lyne's UNFAITHFUL [2002; starring Richard Gere, Diane Lane, Oliver Martinez], with alterations in the story to suit Indian sensibilities, but not DOUBLE INDEMNITY [1944].

  • Also, does MURDER have plenty of skin-show and blatant display of steamy scenes since the promotions focus on a sizzling Mallika Sherawat?

  • Yes, the film does have its share of skin-show, but those scenes have been filmed aesthetically. The outcome is not in the least vulgar!

  • So, does MURDER leave the viewer enchanted?

    Yes, to a large extent!

Sudhir [Ashmit Patel], his wife Simran [Mallika Sherawat] and their son Kabir are settled in Bangkok. Engrossed in business and chasing his dreams, Sudhir ignores Simran, who feels the vacuum in her life. The cracks in their relationship begin to show.

On a rainy day, Simran bumps into an old buddy, Sunny [Emraan Hashmi]. This brings back memories of the past: Sunny and Simran had been in love before they got married. But destiny had something else in store for them.

Back to the present: Sudhir and Simran's loneliness brings them together and ignites the passion. Subsequently, they cross all limits, getting obsessed and addicted to each other in the process.

Sudhir begins to pick up on clues that his wife is hiding something. He even hires a detective to keep track of her activities. And his doubts come true when the detective gives him proof of her infidelity. Sudhir's world is shaken with the reality of Simran's affair.

On learning the truth, Sudhir decides to confront Sunny. And this very meeting leads to devastating results for all.

MURDER has several factors going in its favour -

  • MURDER depicts the changing face of Hindi cinema. In most Bollywood flicks, the woman remained a mute spectator and a doormat when her man indulged in affairs. In TUM?, HAWAS and now MURDER, it's the wife who commits adultery, not the man.

  • The passion play has been amalgamated beautifully in the story. For instance, Emraan and Mallika's first tryst appears on screen in fragments, as Mallika recalls it during her train ride back home. She undergoes a roller coaster of emotions simultaneously - she's excited, she's afraid, she feels guilty. She's simultaneously weepy, her hands fluttering to her flushed face, wiping away tears.

  • Director Anurag Basu opens the cards at this stage, making it clear that this is not the beginning of a relationship, but the first step towards catastrophe.

  • Just when you thought that the story actually ends at the interval point, the director surprises you with a twist in the tale in the second half. And by the time the film reaches its climax, the sequence of events take the viewer by surprise yet again.

  • But MURDER is not without its share of downers -

  • The film is slow-paced in the first half. And that can really get taxing for a viewer who's hungry for the events to unravel at a rapid pace. It can also do without a couple of scenes to perk up the goings-on.

  • Besides, the treatment of the film is very city-centric, very urban, which may restrict its appeal to the gentry at multiplexes.

  • The idea of showing Emraan's girlfriend doesn't come across all that convincingly. Even the climax - when Ashmit escapes from the police headquarters and lands up at the same place where Emraan and Mallika are having a tiff - seems formulaic after reaching a crescendo. It gives an impression that the writer and director were in a hurry to culminate the story.

  • MURDER is impeccably filmed and sexually charged, but had director Anurag Basu concentrated on the loose ends in the screenplay, it would've taken the graph of the film to a different level altogether.

Anu Malik's music is an asset. Both 'Kaho Na Kaho' and 'Bheege Hont Tere' are gems in terms of composition. Their picturisation of the latter is quite erotic. 'Dil Ko Hazaar Baar' [Kashmira Shah sporting a 1950s get-up] is another excellent number with rich lyrical value that comes up at the most appropriate time.

Cinematography is first-rate. Seldom have the eye-catching locales of Bangkok been exploited so effectively in a Bollywood flick. Dialogues are alright.

MURDER stands on three performances - Mallika, Ashmit and Emraan.

Known as a glamour doll with amazing confidence to enact bold scenes, Mallika proves that she's not just a sex goddess. This performance is sure to catch the viewer unexpected. The actor has evolved tremendously since her first full-fledged role [KHWAHISH]. Free exposure of her anatomy will only multiply her fans.

Ashmit Patel may have looked awkward in his debut film [INTEHA], but he seems to have evolved this time around. Handling a complex role - expressing with eyes mainly - can prove to be a daunting task for a one-film-old, but the actor does impress you in sequences that demand dramatics.

Emraan Hashmi is fantastic in a role that seems tailormade for him. Enacting the role of an obsessive lover with flourish, there's no denying that the narrative gets a major impetus thanks to Emraan's performance.

Raj Zutshi [as the cop] does his part very well.

On the whole, MURDER is an engrossing entertainer. At the box-office, the lethal combination of an attention-grabbing title, sex in its content and aggressive promotion will ensure a safe ride for the film. Business at metros should prove to be the best.

Musafir is a 2004 Bollywood thriller directed by Sanjay Gupta and starring Anil Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt and Sameera Reddy. The film was controversial because of some sensual scenes, including kissing, between Kapoor and Reddy's characters.

    Story

Anil Kapoor plays "Lucky", a conman hoping to retire with his girlfriend after one last job. Unfortunately for him, things do not go as planned and he becomes involved with a ruthless killer Billa (Dutt).

He steals a 25 lacs (2.5 million) from Billa with the help of his friends. But his girlfriend Lara (Mitra) steals it from him instead. He, then, comes to know that his friends have been murdered. Billa tracks Lucky down. But Lucky is able to strike a deal. He is to go to Goa and meet Jacko and sell him a bag of unknown contents.

Lucky travels to Goa. On the way he comes across a Police Officer (Pancholi) whose jeep has broken down. Aware that he is, probably, carrying illegal cargo, he doen't stop to help the officer. In Goa, he meets Jacko (Shakti Kapoor) and sets a rendevouz. On his return to his hotel he comes across the same officer who seems to have becme suspicious of Lucky.

In a small restaurant he sights a young dancer (Reddy). He follows her and gets an opportunity to meet her when her car breaks down. He offers her a lift home. She introduces herself as Sam (probably a nickname for Sameera).

At Sam's home, Lucky tries to get too close to Sam when another man comes in. He turns out to be her husband Lukka (Manjrekar).

After retrieving her car from the road, Lukka and Sam go home while Lucky goes on his way. That night Lucky arrives in a disco to meet Jacko again. Here he again comes across Sam. After getting the money, Lucky prepares to leave the next morning.

Next day, Sam arrives at Lucky's hotel to meet him. But there meeting is cut short when Lucky notices the same inspector. He tells Sam to hide and hides the bag of money in the vehicle of an unsuspecting motorist. By the time Inspector leaves, the vehicle with the money is gone.

Meanwhile, Billa tracks down Lara, gets the money back and kills her. He then calls Lucky asking him whether everything is fine. While Billa conceals the fact that he has his money back, Lucky conceals that he has lost the money.

He again comes across Lukka. It turns out that he wants Lucky to kill Sam and in return Lucky would get 25 Lacs. Ironically, Sam meets Lucky and sets up a deal that if Lucky would kill Lukka she will pay him 25 Lacs. Both of them want the work done that night.

But events take a different turn when Lukka attempts to assault Sam and Sam accidentally shoots him dead. Lucky, however, gets the money and both try to get out of Goa. But the inspector is following them.To Lucky's shock, Sam identifies the inspector as Lukka's brother Tiger and the 25 lacs actually belong to Tiger. Lucky somehow shakes Tiger off his pusuit, hides the money in an abandoned railway platform and rents a room in a lodging. He then reveals Sam that he has grown distrustful of her because of too many twists in her story.

The next morning she is nowhere to be found. Lucky desperately searches her and when he finally finds her he realizes that he has fallen in love with her.

Suddenly they attacked by Inspector Tiger with his police force. Lucky is running out of ammunition when Billa arrives and shoots down all the police officers. Tiger, however, manages to escape by making Sam his hostage.

At gunpoint Lucky agrees to take Billa to the place where the money is hidden. When they reach the platform, Lucky finds that Tiger has discovered the money. A fist-to-fist duel ensues between Tiger and Lucky but Billa intevenes and strikes a final deal.

Both Lucky and Tiger have to walk on two parallel railway tracks blindfolded. The person towards whom the train comes is gone....If Lucky survives then he will get the girl while Billa will take the money, but if Tiger is saved he gets the money and Billa will take the girl.

The train however changes tracks at the last moment and heads towards Lucky. Sam screams in horror and pleads Billa to let her go. From Sam's scream Tiger comes to know that Lucky is doomed. He takes off his blindfold and waves a farewell at Lucky. But he promptly shot dead by Billa (because Billa notices the bracelet that was on Tiger's wrist that belonged to his now dead fellow comrade).

He then allows Sam to run to Lucky and try to save him. She does pull him off the tracks before the train could reach him.

Billa smiles and vrooms off in his bike. After going a short distance, however, he stops and drops the bag to ground in a brief act of generosity and then goes away.

    Download Muskaan Songs

    Review

Watching MUSKAAN is akin to watching four films at one time. The film starts off as a love story, gets into the groove of a love triangle, turns into a whodunit and of course, with a music company backing a project, there's an abundant supply of songs [musical] as well.

But, like they say, too many cooks spoil the broth, similarly too many sub-plots tarnishes the efforts that have gone into the making of this enterprise.

Samir [Aftab Shivdasani] is a successful fashion designer. He has three close friends in Sharad [Parvin Dabas], Satin [Vrajesh Hirjee] and Shikha [Anjala Zaveri], who work with him as well.

Janvi [Neha] is in love with Samir, while Samir treats her as a mere friend.

Samir becomes 'phone friends' with a girl named Muskaan [Gracy Singh]. Their conversations, which begin with a wrong number, leads to a friendship and gradually, the two fall in love.

Since both Samir and Muskaan are heading for Shimla [both are unaware of the other's location], they decide to talk again after fifteen days.

Samir and Muskaan meet in Shimla, oblivious of each other's identity and sparks fly. They get attracted to each other, but before they could profess love, Janvi is murdered. Who is the killer?

Directors Rohit-Manish and writer Atul Sharma have compartmentalized the film. The first half-an-hour, when two strangers communicate with each other without knowing what the other person looks like, reminds you of SIRF TUM [Sanjay Kapoor, Priya Gill] and NA TUM JAANO NA HUM [Hrithik Roshan, Esha Deol].

In fact, in the first half-an-hour, as many as five songs flow one after the other, also making it look like a musical.

While all this seems to be happening, there's a mysterious man who's out to assassinate Aftab. The story shifts to Shimla and a new love story begins. And when Neha arrives on the scene, the scene is set for a love triangle, of two women [Gracy, Neha] loving the same guy [Aftab].

Again, the story changes gears when Neha is found murdered and the fingers of suspicion point towards her four friends - Aftab, Anjali, Parvin and Vrajesh. And as soon as the murder mystery is solved, the directors and writer start work on culminating the love story.

Watching MUSKAAN makes you feel as if the directors and writer have no clue about internet and webchats. A story like the one presented in MUSKAAN looks completely outdated in today's electronic age. Such stories might've been palatable in the 1980s, but in today's times and age, it is simply difficult to absorb.

The pre-climax, when the identity of the killer is revealed, may catch the viewer unaware, but the reason that prompts the killer to commit the murder looks outright ridiculous.

Directors Rohit-Manish are not only saddled with an outdated and unimaginative story, even the execution of the subject is plain mediocre. Cinematography [K. Dattu] is quite captivating and the outdoor locales of Switzerland, South Africa and Dubai enhance the visual impact considerably.

Music [Nikhil-Vinay] sounds pleasing, but loses its impact when viewed with the narrative. In fact, a couple of songs lose their charm partly because they come up without valid situations. Yet, the best song of the lot is 'Jaaneman Chupke Chupke', which is repeated thrice in the film.

Aftab Shivdasani does make a sincere attempt to rise above the ordinary and he does succeed in a few sequences. Also, the outfits worn by him are very trendy. Gracy Singh is strictly okay, though she needs to keep a vigil on her weight.

Neha does quite well. Parvin Dabas and Anjala Zaveri have inconsequential roles. Vrajesh Hirjee is loud. Gulshan Grover and Sharat Saxena are monotonous. Rajeev Verma and Razzak Khan are as usual.

On the whole, MUSKAAN will bring no muskaan on the faces of either the cinegoers or the makers or even its distributors. A non-starter.

    Download Naach Songs

    Review

First things first! With a title like NAACH, you expect this RGV film to be a musical, with songs aplenty. But NAACH is more of an intense love story.

So, is NAACH at par with the immensely likeable RANGEELA? Or MAST? Or MAIN MADHURI DIXIT BANNA CHAHTI HOON? Note: All three RGV films had the backdrop of the film industry.

NAACH is not one of those bubbly, romantic, popcorn flicks. It's not hardcore escapist cinema either. The master film-maker tries to make the characters appear very life-like, very real and in the process makes a film that may not be absorbed by an avid moviegoer.

Unlike RGV's previous flicks, NAACH is abstract, offbeat, unusual. And that's why it fails to arrest the audience's interest.

NAACH tells the story of two characters - Rewa [Antra Mali], a wannabe choreographer and Abhi [Abhishek Bachchan], a struggling actor.

Rewa and Abhi are both trying to get a foothold in the industry. Abhi is lucky to get a break, while Rewa is shown the door since the lead actress wants her fav choreographer in the film. Things reach a stage where Abhi and Rewa go separate ways due to ideological differences.

Abhi becomes a big star, while Rewa continues with her struggle. She finally manages the big break when a music company boss, Diwakar [Ritesh Deshmukh], offers her a video, as an actress. There's no looking back, Rewa becomes famous overnight.

Abhi and Rewa meet again, this time in a restaurant. There's uneasiness. The same night, Abhi confesses to Rewa that he still loves her. But Rewa turns down the offer.

Diwakar now wants to start a musical film and he approaches Rewa and Abhi for the main roles. What happens next?

NAACH is about Abhi and Rewa's principles and their outlook towards life. How those principles throw a spanner in their lives forms the crux of the story.

Let's get things right at the very outset: NAACH is not inspired by Hong Kong auteur Wong Kar-Wai's Chinese film IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE [2000], as being widely speculated.

With a thin plot on hand, RGV tries to experiment with NAACH. If RANGEELA was a heady mix of romance and music, while MAST and MAIN MADHURI DIXIT BANNA CHAHTI HOON were part-realistic, NAACH fits into the realistic zone completely.

Nothing wrong with being realistic, but NAACH moves at a sluggish/lethargic pace throughout and even the screenplay [writers: Pooja Ladha Surti, Musharaff Ali Khan, Sulekha Bajpai] isn't half as captivating as RANGEELA.

In the first place, one fails to understand why Antra is shown to be so strong-headed even though what Abhishek says and means makes sense and is in the interests of both. After the tiff at the intermission point, when the two decide to go separate ways, you expect some movement in the story in the post-interval portions. But nothing happens!

The story has a third character coming in - Ritesh Deshmukh - in the second half and although the actor does manage to lend credence to his character, there's nothing dramatic happening in this half as well. More than anything else, your heart doesn't pine for the lovers to unite, which is so vital in a love story.

RGV seems to have chosen the right story, but has gone wrong in the screenplay department. The narrative doesn't have those moments to excite you. It's quite dull at times and the slow pace dilutes the impact further. Yes, there's no denying that the film has been shot extremely well and technically speaking, it's a notch above most Hindi films.

Music is quite appealing and the picturization of at least three tracks is fantastic - 'Naach Naach Ke' [music: Shailendra Swapnil], 'Bandhne Lagi' [music: Amar Mohile] and 'Sara Sara' [music: Amar Mohile]. Cinematography [Kiran Reddy] is fabulous. The locations in the 'Bandhne Lagi' track are simply breath-taking. Choreography [Raoul & Maitria, Shabina Khan, Terrence Lewis, Harshall-Vitthal] is excellent.

NAACH is embellished with great performances. Abhishek Bachchan proves yet again that he's amongst the most dependable actors of Indian cinema today. This is another performance that will be written about and discussed in days to come.

Antra Mali is first-rate, conveying so much through her eyes. What makes this performance special is the way Antra approaches it - without actually replicating anyone. Besides, her dances/acrobatics are a treat. She also exposes her anatomy without inhibitions. Ritesh Deshmukh has a small but significant role and he does complete justice to it.

On the whole, NAACH lacks in that vital department that's the lifeline of every film - script. At the box-office, given the tough competition this week [VEER-ZAARA, AITRAAZ, MUGHAL-E-AZAM] and the fact that it's not the type that would instantly catch the moviegoers' attention, NAACH won't dance its way into the audience's heart.

    Review

In this fast changing scenario, when more and more innovative themes are being attempted by film-makers in Bollywood, you still come across films that are stuck up in the 1980s' jaded formulae.

The Indian cinegoer has witnessed parents/families opposing the young lovers in an umpteen number of films before - from Q.S.Q.T. to MAINE PYAR KIYA to D.D.L.J.

So, what's new in RUN? Nothing! It's old wine packaged in a new bottle. Not only is the film low on content, it's even low on entertainment!

Siddharth aka Siddhu [Abhishek Bachchan] comes to Delhi for further studies. He spots the beautiful Jhanavi [Bhoomika Chawla] and is attracted to her instantaneously. Little does he know that she carries with her an excess baggage that threatens to take his life away.

This excess baggage is Jhanavi's demonic brother Ganpat [Mahesh Manjrekar], who's overtly possessive of his sister. For him, the hand that dares to touch Jhanavi's heart just has to be cut.

Ganpat leaves no stone unturned to make life hell for Siddharth. Finally, Siddharth devises a foolproof way to combat the devious Ganpat.

Remake of the Tamil hit RUN [Madhavan, Meera Jasmine], the Hindi adaptation is only as 'fresh' in its concept as last month's newspaper headlines.

The problem with RUN is that the viewer can actually predict what's going to happen next. To look for anything novel in the film is akin to finding a needle in a haystack. From the word 'go', director Jeeva relies on the same old recipe to convey what he intends to.

The story hardly moves in the first half. There's an overdose of songs [most of these are 'dream songs'!], which pop up every 10 minutes without valid situations. Besides, there's a comedy track - Vijay Raaz - which has no relevance to the story of the film. Of course, there's Mahesh Manjrekar, who is supposed to be a goonda, but does nothing more than bash up guys who keep making passes at his sister.

If the first half is bland [Abhishek confronting Manjrekar's henchmen is the sole watchable sequence in the first half], the post-interval portions take the graph of the film completely down. Mainly because, till almost halfway through the second half, the story hardly moves ahead.

The lovers continue to meet, away from the prying eyes of the overtly possessive brother. And even the brother doesn't confront the guy head-on.

You expect things to pep up towards the pre-climax, when the guy [Abhishek Bachchan] is sacked from the college, a speeding truck knocks down his sister [Ayesha Julka] and the brother-in-law [Mukesh Rishi] is falsely planted in a corruption case. That's when the narrative gets slightly exciting.

But the climax is again archaic. Abhishek is beaten black and blue by Manjrekar's cronies, but he suddenly gets up and bashes up Manjrekar in true filmi style. Thus, the hand-to-hand fight between Abhishek and Manjrekar fails to evoke any reactions from the viewer.

Ditto for the romance between Abhishek and Bhumika. All through the first half, the girl does not respond to his overtures, but when she confesses her love in the second half, it's done in such a fashion that your heart doesn't beat for the lovers when they find themselves in a crisis.

Director Jeeva is just not able to get the viewer hooked on to the proceedings because he is saddled with an outdated story [N. Linguswamy]. Having an obsolete or mundane story is still pardonable, but RUN doesn't even have any twist in the tale or a stimulating screenplay. The film also does not connect with the viewer because it tends to get monotonous after a point, more so towards the post-interval portions.

From the script point of view, the film offers no reason why Manjrekar opposes Abhishek throughout. In fact, not once does Manjrekar confront his sister even though he knows that she has been meeting him secretly. Strange, isn't it?

Himesh Reshammiya's music is tuneful and thanks to some good promotion, you tend to hum the songs when it plays on the big screen. But, as mentioned earlier, the songs are not an integral part of the story but are used as a commercial ingredient since a love story is incomplete without songs. It won't be wrong to state that a few songs have been wasted in the film.

Cinematography [Jeeva] is better than his direction. Action sequences [Peter Hain] are well executed, but the sequences are so raw that it might tend to put off the ladies and family audiences. Dialogues [Kamal Pandey] are alright.

Abhishek Bachchan provides some engaging moments thanks to his performance. He seems to be taking a step forward with every film. Bhoomika Chawla doesn't get much scope to display histrionics. She run through her part mechanically. Mahesh Manjrekar has a half-baked role, but he enacts it like a seasoned performer. But if you expect him to steal the show, like in KAANTE, you'll be sorely disappointed.

Cast in different roles, Ayesha Julka and Mukesh Rishi are passable. Goga Kapoor is adequate. Vijay Raaz tends to go overboard. In fact, the digs against his parents [calling his father Anjan Shrivastava a crow and what not!] is in bad taste.

On the whole, RUN is too weak a fare to leave any impact whatsoever.

    Review

Hindi cinema is truly evolving. Directors and writers are opting for themes that were unimaginable till a few years ago.

Debutante director Anupam Sinha's SHUKRIYA also treads the untrodden path

The Indian cinegoers have been on a diet of stereotypical fares since the last few decades. Therefore, a theme that isn't formulaic could meet with diverse reactions. And this goes for SHUKRIYA.

If the story of this film is its USP, it's also a deterrent. While some would love the novel theme, there might be a sizable section of moviegoers who may not absorb the unconventional storyline.

SHUKRIYA tells the story of a tycoon Jindal [Anupam Kher], on the verge of celebrating his 60th birthday.

The film begins with Jindal hearing strange voices. At first he thinks he's hallucinating. But it dawns upon him that he's receiving messages from the God of Death, who seems to forewarn him that his days are numbered and hence, he has very little time on his hands.

Jindal has several incomplete tasks to accomplish. Among them is the inauguration of a hospital in memory of his deceased mother.

When the hour arrives, Jindal talks to the God of Death about the predicament of being human. The God of Death decides to take human form and experience the wonders of being human. Jindal's death is deferred by four days, while the God of Death has four days to live.

Jindal's daughter Sanam [Shriya Saran] meets an aspiring singer Ricky [Aftab Shivdasani] and sparks fly. They part. He is killed. Next morning, she is startled to find Ricky in their mansion. The God of Death now occupies the body of Ricky

Inspired by Martin Brest's 1998 flick MEET JOE BLACK [Anthony Hopkins, Brad Pitt], which in turn was loosely based on the 1934 movie DEATH TAKES A HOLIDAY, SHUKRIYA has an unconventional storyline. Although Hindu mythology talks of God of Death, the Indianized adaptation of MEET JOE BLACK wouldn't meet with wholehearted approval.

Handling an offbeat theme could prove one daunting task, but debutante director Anupam Sinha deserves extra browny points for handling the subject with sensitivity and dexterity. While handling a plot like this, there's a remote possibility of serious turning into comical, but the spirit of the story remains intact till the last sequence. Sinha's handling of the emotional moments is sure to meet with all-round praise.

But the film loses its sheen partly in its post-interval portions. And it gets too slow-paced by the time it reaches the finale. However, even the finale is unconventional and the re-appearance of Ricky [Aftab comes alive] seems too much of a cinematic liberty.

Sinha has chosen breath-taking locales as the backdrop and that gives the film a visually striking look. Although a number of films have been shot in England and Switzerland, the locales are absolute eye-candy in SHUKRIYA. The cinematographer [Rajeev Shrivastava] has done complete justice, must say.

SHUKRIYA is embellished with a strong musical score [Vishal-Shekhar, Yogendra-Devendra, Himesh Reshammiya]. 'Maine Dil Mein Chhupaya Tumhe Dhadkan Banake', 'Ni Soniye' and 'Maine Poochha Kudrat Se' are excellent numbers and their picturization is perfect. Choreography [Baba Yadav] is first-rate.

SHUKRIYA boasts of wonderful performances by the principal cast. Aftab Shivdasani handles a difficult role with remarkable ease and delivers a knockout performance. It underlines the fact that the young actor can deliver in serious roles as well.

Shriya Saran is an actress to watch. She not only looks pretty and photogenic, but also enacts her part with amazing confidence. Her expressions in the emotional sequences deserve special mention.

Anupam Kher is in form after a long, long time. He takes to his part like a seasoned player. Rati Agnihotri is first-rate. Newcomer Indraneel needs to loosen up a bit. Rana Jung Bahadur provides some entertaining moments.

On the whole, SHUKRIYA will meet with mixed reactions from moviegoers - some might like it, others may not absorb its theme. At the box-office, SHUKRIYA will have to rely heavily on word of mouth, provided the story is accepted. It's not the type that would set the box-office ablaze, nonetheless the strong emotional quotient should appeal to the families and those looking for unadulterated entertainment.

    Cast

    Aftab Shivdasani...... Ricky
    Shreya Saran...... Sanam
    Anupam Kher...... Jindal

After arriving he finds Kaveriamma, and discovers that the woman in the bookstore is his childhood friend, Gita, who took Kaveriamma to the village. Gita is a teacher in the local school and lives in the village with her younger brother and Kaveriamma. Mohan soon takes to the little village and its people, but during his stay, also witnesses discrimination based on caste, profession, and gender. He tries to convince people in the village to allow the low-caste boys and girls to finish their education. After initial reluctance, all villagers agree.

The film progresses to show how Mohan endears himself to the local people. However, one night, Gita confronts him and accuses him of coming to Charanpur only to take away Kaveriamma from her, so that he could have someone to cook and clean for him back home in the United States. Mohan denies the latter, and says that he wants to take Kaveriamma to the US so that she could live a comfortable life.

Kaveriamma overhears this conversation between Mohan and Gita, and decides to let Mohan know of the ground realities in his homeland. He is sent on a trip by Kaveriamma to visit a farmer in a faraway village who is living on a property owned by Gita and has not paid the rent. Upon reaching his home, Mohan discovers that the farmer was once a weaver who, due to unfavourable conditions, decided to give up his profession and become a farmer. This decision was rejected by the village elders who did not believe a weaver should change his profession. He soon fell onto hard times, complicated by the fact that he was denied water to irrigate his crops by the other villagers during the drought period and was generally shunned. Mohan takes a look at the emaciated man, his equally miserable family and his pitiable condition and cannot bring himself to ask for the rent. Instead, he himself gives the man some money, and leaves the place with considerable sorrow in his heart.

Mohan is enormously disturbed by this visit and decides to become more deeply involved in helping those around him. In a get-together at the local school, the village elders ask Mohan about America, its technological advancements and its society. In the course of the conversation, one of the elders says that whatever be the nature of America and its progress, India has its history and its culture that is far superior to anything in the world. This riles Mohan, who asks the villagers about how long they were going to harp about past laurels and ignore the realities of present. He tries to shake the village folk out of their stupor by telling them that they have been accepting their socio-economic status quo for far too long, and that it's time to make a change. The elders, taken aback at his sudden hostility, argue with him, but Mohan simply says that all he knows is that a poor man somewhere is starving because a caste-ridden society won't allow him to change his profession.

At a night of celebration during Ram leela (a festival that marks the return of Lord Ram from exile), the electricity goes out in the village, as usual. The village people think nothing of it, but Mohan is disgusted with their attitude. He comes up to them and asks the sarpanch to give him a hundred men. When asked why, he says that there's a perennial spring on the hill near the village, and that he wants to utilize the spring to generate electricity, thus making the village self-sufficient. He plans to build a reservoir to collect the water and bring it downhill via pipes to a turbine, which would then generate electricity.

The village elders grant his request and Mohan begins working, continuing his NASA project side-by-side. The film shows the progress of both of Mohan's projects intertwined with his growing feelings for Gita, which she reciprocates.

Finally, the big day arrives and the entire village gathers around to see the fruits of their labour. Mohan asks his assistant to open the valve, and water starts to impinge onto the turbine rotors. As the voltmeter approaches 230V (Standard AC voltage in India is 230V), people wait with bated breath. But inexplicably, after 210V, the voltage starts going down and the turbine starts slowing, much to the disappointment of everyone. Mohan runs up to the reservoir to see if all valves are properly open. After seeing that they are, he removes his shirt and jumps into the reservoir, and comes out with a lump of weeds that were blocking the entrance to the outgoing pipe. With the obstruction out of its way, water again starts flowing freely in the pipe, and the turbine whirrs faster and faster. Again, everyone watches, and this time, the voltmeter hits 230V, making the lightbulb that has been placed in a hut at the bottom of the hill glow, much to the joy of the old lady in the hut, as well as every villager present.

However, their joy is short-lived because Mohan announces that he has to go back to America. Kaveriamma declines to go with him (an eventuality that Mohan has guessed by now). The most hurt by his decision is Gita, who too refuses to move to America. Oh his last day, everyone bids him a tearful adieu except Gita, who's not present. She is waiting for him some distance away from the village. She breaks down and gives him a small gift to remember his village and his country by. They share an emotional goodbye and Mohan leaves in his RV to Delhi and from then onto the US.

In the US, his NASA project manager and colleagues are waiting for him to come back and take over the project (the Global Precipitation Measurement satellite). The film then shows Mohan's NASA project progressing rapidly, but interspersed within the NASA scenes are flashbacks of his stay in India, that he cannot seem to forget. He gets more pensive by the day and any reference to India seems to make him nostalgic. Visions of Gita, Kaveriamma, the village and its people haunt him constantly. He confides in his friend/colleague that he is thinking of going back to India but his friend thinks that he's nuts. Finally, Mohan's project is completed and his satellite gets launched. Immediately afterward, he tenders his resignation, much to the dismay of his friend and boss, but looking at his resolve in the end, his boss tells him, "Alright Mohan, go light your bulb".

From here is the final scene wherein Mohan has been shown back in his village (without any connecting storyline in between). He is shown playing a friendly wrestling bout with the local postmaster (who wrestles as a hobby), and the film ends with a happy Mohan surrounded by his loved ones, glad to be back where he belongs.

    Review

Hell hath no fury like a car scorned! The name TAARZAN is generally associated with the legendary jungle hero. But the star and kalakaar of TAARZAN THE WONDER CAR is a car, which fights, feels, rejoices in fact, behaves exactly like a human.

There have been a string of killer car movies in Hollywood. Films like THE CAR, KILLER CAR, MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE, KILLDOZER and of course, the unforgettable CHRISTINE [1983], have entertained millions of viewers worldwide.

Loosely based on CHRISTINE, TAARZAN THE WONDER CAR falls in the same mould as a revenge film. Except, of course, the revenge seeker in TAARZAN THE WONDER CAR is not a man, but a machine [car].

The car does just about everything that a Hindi film hero would do, including punishing the evil-doers. Frankly, the efforts that have gone into the making of TAARZAN THE WONDER CAR need to be lauded. At least someone has had the guts to swim against the tide and offer a genuinely hatke fare!

But, of course, a concept like TAARZAN THE WONDER CAR is alien for Indian moviegoers. Yes, there has been a CHALTI KA NAAM GAADI [Ashok Kumar, Kishore Kumar, Anup Kumar] and a SHATRANJ [Mithun, Jackie, Juhi], but never has a car been projected as a hero. In that respect, TAARZAN THE WONDER CAR is truly different.

However, making the car behave like a human and adding the track of an aatma to the storyline may just look implausible to a section of hardcore Indian moviegoers.

Raj [Vatsal Sheth] is the son of a car designer, Devesh [Ajay Devgan]. Devesh designs a swanky car, much ahead of its times, and goes to a company to fix a deal.

However, the four partners of the company [Pankaj Dheer, Sadashiv Amrapurkar, Shakti Kapoor and Mukesh Tiwari] disagree on certain terms and abort the deal. But without the knowledge of Devesh, they copy the design of the car and register it in their name.

When Devesh threatens to move court, the evil four, with the help of a corrupt police officer, kill him and along with his car, throw him in a lake. Deveshs family thinks that he has died in an accident.

Kartar Singh [Amrish Puri] owns a garage where Raj works. Raj finds a car in a junkyard and takes it upon himself to transform it into a macho machine. How the wonder car takes the villains to task, eliminating them one by one, forms the crux of the film.

A storyline like the one in TAARZAN THE WONDER CAR hasnt been witnessed before. Hindi moviegoers have so far witnessed icchadhari snakes [NAGIN]/animals [dogs, elephants, cows] or ghosts seeking revenge [Ramsay films, BHOOT], but a car taking evil-doers to task is indeed a novel experience.

If the novel premise of the film is its USP [since a theme like this hasnt been witnessed before], the very plot is also a downer. For, the car in TAARZAN THE WONDER CAR behaves like a super-hero. It repairs itself, it fights, it reacts, it survives calamities exactly like a Bollywood hero. Now this aspect may seem far-fetched to those who choose not to believe in such cinema.

Of course, a Hindi film is incomplete without the mandatory song and dance routine and TAARZAN THE WONDER CAR has that as well, with the new pair [Vatsal and Ayesha] handling those portions effortlessly.

Directors Abbas-Mustan have handled a few sequences with aplomb. A few dramatic scenes and the underwater sequence in the climax are simply superb. An overall stylishly-executed fare, the film entertains at most parts. The only time the graph goes down is when the romantic portions take over. The romantic track has little novelty to offer.

Another factor that stands out is the car, designed by famed automobile designer Dilip Chhabria, and the thrills that have been executed by action directors Kaushal-Moses. In a revenge saga, where the car does all the killing, youd expect mutilated bodies, blood and gore. But TAARZAN THE WONDER CAR is devoid of all that. The thrills in the film, mainly the one in the climax as also those involving Mukesh Tiwari [before intermission], are amongst the high points of the enterprise. Kaushal-Moses deserve full marks for making the most of the opportunity and handling the thrills with dexterity.

Himesh Reshammiyas music is pleasant. The title track as well as O Sajan and Ooh La La stand out. Cinematography is of standard.

Vatsal Sheth, who makes his bow on the big screen after his television debut a couple of years ago, acts ably. He has screen presence, dances well, emotes as required but only thing, he looks skinny at places. He needs to work on his physique for sure. Ayesha Takia doesnt really get a chance to display histrionics, but does her glamorous part with confidence. Ajay Devgan, in a brief role, is as usual.

Amrish Puri tends to go overboard. Farida Jalal is, like always, dependable. Rajpal Yadav is a scene-stealer yet again. Pankaj Dheer and Mukesh Tiwari impress. Gulshan Grover and Sadashiv Amrapurkar are okay, while Shakti Kapoor is fair.

On the whole, TAARZAN THE WONDER CAR is a different experience that will find its share of supporters and adversaries. At the box-office, the film will have to rely on kid-power to make it big. Had the film released during vacations, the outcome wouldve been much better.

    Download Veer Zaara Songs

Veer-Zaara is a 2004 film directed by Yash Chopra. It is a romance set against the ongoing conflict between India and Pakistan. The movie stars Shahrukh Khan, Preity Zinta and Rani Mukerji. The dialogues were written by Aditya Chopra. Yash Chopra returned to directing after eight years, his last directed film being Dil To Pagal Hai (1997).

    Synopsis

Most of the story is told in flashback from Veer's prison cell.

Zaara Haayat Khan (Preity Zinta) is an independent, carefree, and sprightly young Pakistani girl travelling to India. Her bus, which is traveling to India with her "bebe's" (a Punjabi word to denote mother or grandmother, but here used for Zaara's old governess) ashes. Before dying, "Bebe" (Zohra Sehgal) begs Zaara to fulfill her final wish - to take her ashes to India, to the holy Sikh city of Kiritpur, and scatter her ashes in the river there, among her ancestors. Zaara decides to carry out Bebe's dying wish.

In India, Zaara's bus gets into an accident, overturns, and she is saved by an Indian pilot, Squadron Leader Veer Pratap Singh (Shahrukh Khan). Zaara completes her Bebe's final rites with the help of Veer. He convinces Zaara to go back to his village with him, and spend one day together. Veer then takes Zaara on a tour of India's Punjab and they visit Veer's hometown during the Lodi festival. The two fall in love and Veer is just waiting for the right time to tell Zaara how he feels about her. But then it is revealed that Zaara is engaged to another man, Raza (Manoj Bajpai). During their last few moments together, Veer confesses his love, then watches sadly as Zaara boards the train that will take her back to Pakistan. Both believe that this is the end of the story, and the last time they will ever see each other.

Zaara eventually realizes that she loves Veer and cannot marry her fiancé; Veer, after being told over the phone by Zara's friend Shabbo, that how miserable she(Zara) is without him, quits from the Indian Air Force and goes to Pakistan to bring her back with him to India. Zaara's mother, however, begs him to leave Zaara. Zaara's father is a high-profile politician whose reputation will be ruined if news got out that his daughter is in love with a Hindu man. Veer respects this and decides to leave. But Zaara's fiancé, outraged by the shame Zaara has brought upon him, frames Veer and has him wrongly imprisoned for being an Indian spy.

22 years later, Veer meets Saamiya Siddiqui (Rani Mukerji), who is an idealistic Pakistani lawyer, whose mission in life is to pave the path for women's empowerment. To dissuade a female lawyer from being successful, she has been given Veer's case, an impossible case to many. The man has been languishing in prison and has not spoken for the last 22 years.

Veer tells Saamiya she can do anything for the case except mention, much less subpoena, Zaara's family. He's assigned the number 786 for his prisoner number. This convinces Saamiya that God has chosen Veer for some special purpose, and determined to exonerate him, and restore his name, identity and country.

After a number of attempts which fail to prove Veer's innocence, Saamiya goes to Veer's village in India to gather evidence proving Veer is Veer and not Rajesh Rathore the spy. There, Saamiya finds Zaara has taken over in the village for Veer's parents. Saamiya convinces Zaara to go back to Pakistan with her and finally tell the truth about Veer's identity. The judge releases Veer from prison and apologizes on behalf of Pakistan.

    Box office

The movie opened in theatres on 12 November 2004. It grossed Rs.45,00,00,000. In its first week it grossed Rs.17,00,00,000 which hold the recored for highest grossed first week from 2004-2005.

    Review

An oft-repeated Bollywood formula flick in a new avatar is what BLACKMAIL is all about. Only the characters of yore are replaced with the new leaders of Bollywood with a strong dose of laudable Devgan action.

Sadly, the storyline, despite all its thrills, due to its age-old formula, makes one see answers before the questions are asked. And therein lies the problem.

Shekhar [Ajay Devgan] is car-racer who he uses his skills to help prisoners flee from jails. To him, the Himalayan rally and the Mumbai roads seem the same when it comes to displaying his driving skills - he is unstoppable.

ACP Abhay Rathod [Suneil Shetty] is leading a content life with his wife [Priyanka Chopra] and son Chirag [Parth Dave]. Their dream world collapses when Chhota [Mukesh Rishi] hires Shekhar to settle scores with Abhay.

Besides, Shekhar has a score to settle with Abhay as well. The cop, in his bid to nab Shekhar at some point in time, was indirectly responsible for the death of Shekhar's wife [Dia Mirza] in an accident. And as time flies, Devgan also has Devgan's child with him kept someplace!

BLACKMAIL takes inspiration from the Hollywood flick RANSOM [1996; Mel Gibson]. Come to think of it, BLACKMAIL has two factors going in its favour - the emotional moments and competent actors - and is also garnished with some excellent stunts. But the film is not without its share of blemishes...

The problem is, BLACKMAIL doesn't take a lot of risks. It follows the mundane predictable path and the effort gets diluted in the process.

To be honest, BLACKMAIL could've been a taut, compelling, heart-wrenching thriller, but is ruined by an oft-repeated plot. The writers have packaged the routine formulae and presented it in a new garb. Besides some brilliantly executed action scenes, there's nothing that really arrests your attention.

Director Anil Devgan has made a slick product, but he ought to realize that it's the story that does the talking. After an interesting start, the graph of the film starts going downhill primarily because predictability seeps in at this juncture.

The action, backed by the right sound and editing, makes for some interesting moments. In fact, the action portions are the mainstay of the film. The music [Himesh Reshammiya] is a disappointment simply because the songs are out of place and have not been weaved into the story. Even the item song looks completely forced. If deleted, it might help in perking up the goings-on. Cinematography is quite good.

BLACKMAIL belongs to Ajay Devgan completely. The actor puts his best foot forward and delivers a striking performance. Suniel Shetty is adequate, while Dia Mirza stands out in her scenes. Priyanka Chopra does not have much to do. Parth Dave is convincing. Mukesh Rishi is as usual.

On the whole, BLACKMAIL is not as gripping as one would've expected it to be. At the box-office, nothing to rave or rant about!

Download Yeh Lamhe Judaai Ke Songs

    Yeh Lamhe Judaai Ke
is a 2004 bollywood film that stars Shahrukh Khan, Raveena Tandon, Mohnish Behl, and Kiran Kumar.

    Review

Ritesh Nayyar's YEH LAMHE JUDAAI KE is a routine love story that has a dash of everything - romance, drama and mystery. Unfortunately, the film has taken a long period to hit the screens and despite the presence of the super-star [Shah Rukh Khan], it comes across as a jaded attempt.

Dushyant [Shah Rukh Khan], Jaya [Raveena Tandon], Sujit [Mohnish Bahl] and Nisha [Navneet Nishan] are childhood friends.

Dushyant aspires to become a successful singer, but is hard hit for money. Jaya helps Dushyant realize his dreams and ambitions. As Dushyant gets successful, cracks start surfacing on his relationship with Jaya. Reason: Dushyant values his career more than his love life.

Sujit and Nisha take advantage of this situation and try to get close to Dushyant. Nisha is keen to marry Dushyant because of his new-found status.

Meanwhile, Kamlesh Dhingra [Avtar Gill], who is Nisha's father, approaches Dushyant to finance his business venture but Rajpal [Kiran Kumar], Dushyant's mentor, turns down the offer. Rajpul has no faith on Dhingra.

Dhingra and Sujit plot to amass Dushyant's wealth by luring Dushyant to marry Nisha and in the process, get rid of Rajpal. But Dushyant comes to know of their evil plans

The problem clearly lies in the fact that YEH LAMHE JUDAAI KE has taken years to reach the theatres. Besides the looks of the stars, the concept of the film is equally archaic. The viewer can actually predict what the next scene would be like.

Frankly, watching YEH LAMHE JUDAAI KE is akin to watching two films within one film. If the film begins with the SRK - Raveena track, the other track crops up from nowhere and that involves a bunch of newcomers, all non-actors.

There are several blanks in the narrative. Like, for instance, in one of the songs only the visuals of SRK and Raveena have been inserted, making it evident that the song was never filmed. Even the narrative looks like an unfinished job, with several questions remaining unanswered.

Director Birendra Nath Tiwari does make an attempt to join the loose ends of the film, but the outcome is least convincing. Music [Nikhil-Vinay, Rajendra Salil] seems inspired by the Nadeem-Shravan tracks, post-AASHIQUI. Cinematography is bad.

The looks of both Shah Rukh Khan and Raveena Tandon give the film a dated look. SRK is as usual, but the dubbing leaves a lot to be desired. It just doesn't sound like SRK. Raveena goes through her part mechanically. Mohnish Bahl is strictly okay. Navneet Nishan makes her presence felt. Kiran Kumar is adequate. Avtar Gill is so-so.

On the whole, YEH LAMHE JUDAAI KE is a non-starter.

Fearing Vicky's intentions, Karan tries to talk him out of his relationship with Sneha, but Vicky assures him that this time he is really is in love with Sneha and not flirting. Karan feels he has lost the only woman he has ever loved but knows he cannot do anything about it. However life goes on and the three of them share a special bond of friendship.

The closeness between Vicky and Sneha cross all boundaries, and just as everything seemed set between the two, one night shatters them both. Trust broken, obsession and confusion ensue and Sneha turns to Karan for support. Over time, Karan finally musters the courage to propose to Sneha.

Just as Sneha and Karan are about to get engaged, Vicky re-enters their lives. The three friends reunite for that one night, and that night changes their lives forever. And take the life of another.

The film had some kissing scenes and contained a sex scene which shows the 'Serial Kisser' Emraan Hashmi in one of his best scenes to date, the scene is between Vicky (Emraan Hashmi) and Sneha (Tanushree Dutta) during the song Aashiq Banaya Apne.

Bluffmaster is a Bollywood movie released on 16 December 2005, starring Abhishek Bachchan, Ritesh Deshmukh, Priyanka Chopra, Boman Irani and Nana Patekar. The plot is largely inspired by the 2004 Hollywood movie Criminal with John C. Reilly and Diego Luna, but has been appropriately Indianized. Criminal was based upon the award winning Argentinian film Nine Queens.

The film was directed by Rohan Sippy, the son of Ramesh Sippy. This is his second directorial venture following his film Kuch Naa Kaho. The role played by Priyanka Chopra was originally given to Aishwarya Rai, but she was dropped from the film.

    Summary

Roy (played by Abhishek Bachchan) is a professional conman (bluffmaster in Indian English), who is a master of his dubious "art." He is in love with the honest and true "Simmi" (played by Priyanka Chopra). When they are about to get engaged, Simmi finds out that Roy is a conman, and she breaks off the relationship. Time passes, and Roy misses Simmi greatly. He tries his best to get back with her, but all attempts go in vain. Then Roy meets "Aditya Srivastav" alias "Dittu" (played by Ritesh Deshmukh). Aditya is a conman too, though an incompetent one. They meet in a lift where Dittu attempts to steal Roy's briefcase. Roy sees through Aditya and catches him out.

After a few days, it is revealed that Dittu's friend goes to jail because of the police. Aditya blames it on Roy, and Roy frustratedly agrees to do anything Aditya says. Aditya asks Roy to teach him how to be a conman. Roy agrees to teach Aditya the art of the con. This altruistic gesture opens up Roy's heart even further; he develops a true friendship for Aditya.

Then Roy is told that he has a brain tumour and will die soon. He decides to perform one last good deed. Aditya tells Roy that he wants to take revenge on his father's enemies. When Simmi finds out about the tumour, she goes back to Roy in order to spend time with him. She sees that he is a changed man, and love blossoms between the two once again. Roy manages to fool "Chandu" (the man Aditya wants revenge against).

Roy's doctor tells him that he can be treated by going to a clinic in Atlanta. Roy gathers up all his con money in order to go for is treatment. Just as all his money is collected, Roy finds out that Chandu has Simmi in custody. Roy sacrifices the money in order to save Simmi. She says that she loves him, and leaves him alone with Chandu. Chandu pushes Roy off the roof...

Then Roy lands on a soft mat below the building. The public come up to him and ask which movie is he shooting for. Roy is confused and says it isn't a movie. The public accuse Roy of thinking they are stupid and walk away. Roy retraces his steps and realises that all the places he has been, turned out to be fake. Then last of all, he goes to a house, and finds that everyone who he thought knew were conning him. They made a movie out of him. All is revealed that Aditya was getting revenge for his father, who Roy had conned. Roy changes his ways, and agrees not to be a conman. He gets back together with Simmi too who was conning him.

    Review

A love story with newcomers, if well told, always proves the dark horse.

CHAND SA ROSHAN CHEHRA follows the same path that Nasir Husain pursued in HUM KISISE KUM NAHIN [Rishi Kapoor, Kaajal Kiran, Tariq], Mansoor Khan embarked upon in QAYAMAT SE QAYAMAT TAK and Sooraj R. Barjatya tackled in MAINE PYAR KIYA.

CHAND SA ROSHAN CHEHRA is the archetypal love story, with mushy romance, lovers' tiffs and misunderstandings, parental opposition et al packed in those two hours. But what works in its favour are three factors -- the lead man's performance [Samir Aftab], melodious music [Jatin-Lalit] and some dramatic moments the film has to offer.

But what also goes against it is its mundane plot, witnessed since time immemorial. CHAND SA ROSHAN CHEHRA has its share of loose ends, with a predictable plot topping the list.

CHAND SA ROSHAN CHEHRA tells the story of Raj [Samir Aftab] and Jiya [Tamanna], who love each other since childhood. But Jiya's opportunist father Oberoi [Kiran Kumar] does not approve of the alliance.

Raj has not been able to forget Jiya for even a day. Before her demise, Raj's mother desired that Raj should marry Jiya. In a sudden twist of fate, Raj gets a chance to go abroad [Switzerland], now Jiya's home.

Raj bumps into Jiya time and again, but they don't see eye to eye. The duo is completely unaware of the other's identity. Raj also meets Firdaus and a friendship develops between them, which is not liked by Firdaus' fianc?nd Raj lands in trouble, only to be bailed out by Firdaus herself.

Raj wins the music competition which infuriates Jiya no end and she gets Raj beaten up by some local goons. Raj now seeks revenge and in the process, both get to know that they are each other's lost love.

Raj visits Jiya's engagement ceremony and is heartbroken to see Jiya getting engaged to someone else [Dilip Thadeshwar]. Jiya is heart-broken as well and wants to call off her engagement. Soon, Oberoi also gets to know the truth about Raj.

How Raj confronts Oberoi forms the crux of the story.

CHAND SA ROSHAN CHEHRA relies on the age-old concept of a man going all out to win his love. Any love story is incomplete without dramatic moments and CHAND SA ROSHAN CHEHRA has that in ample doses.

CHAND SA ROSHAN CHEHRA starts off rather impressively, but it slowly turns out to be a routine saga. But things gather momentum when Jiya learns of Raj's true identity. Post-interval, the drama continues to soar, with the engagement song, 'Woh Din Yaad Karo', being the highpoint.

However, once the battlelines are drawn -- between Raj and Oberoi -- you expect the story to reach the culmination, but the time it takes to reach the climax is long drawn and very, very predictable.

Director Shahab Shamsi has handled a few dramatic sequences well. But the narrative is quite inconsistent, with a number of songs coming back to back soon after the interval. Also, the film is very lengthy in the second part and should've been trimmed by at least 15-20 minutes.

Writer Jalees Sherwani's screenplay gets interesting towards the second half. But for any love story to succeed, it ought to be embellished with clap-trap situations and scenes that tug your heartstrings, which CHAND SA ROSHAN CHEHRA has in minimal doses. Jalees' dialogues are quite nice. Cinematography [Karim Khatri] is appropriate.

Jatin-Lalit's music is an asset. 'Woh Din Yaad Karlo Sanam' and 'Doli Leke Aaye Hain' are the best tracks.

CHAND SA ROSHAN CHEHRA acts as a showreel for Samir Aftab. He gets to do what the conventional hero does in Hindi films. And Samir does it very well. The debutante is photogenic, acts confidently and carries the film on his shoulders. Incidentally, he reminds you of the young Aamir Khan at times.

Tamanna is quite raw at places, but you gradually start liking her. She acts better in the second half. Kiran Kumar is in form after a long time. Talat Aziz is appropriate. Kishori Shahane Vij and Himani Shivpuri [music teacher] are efficient. Vijayendra is alright. Dilip Thadeshwar doesn't get much scope.

On the whole, CHAND SA ROSHAN CHEHRA will have to rely on the youth to leave a mark.

    Review

The job of a promo is to arouse curiosity for a film, besides creating all-round awareness. And that's what the eye-catching and attention-grabbing promos of CHOCOLATE did prior to its release. The stylish promos coupled with the ensemble star cast have created quite a buzz within and outside the industry.

So, is CHOCOLATE as delicious as its packaging? Or is it a bitter experience?

CHOCOLATE is the desi adaptation of Bryan Singer's Hollywood flick THE USUAL SUSPECTS [Gabriel Byrne, Kevin Spacey, Stephen Baldwin, Kevin Pollak, Benicio Del Toro]. Also, CHOCOLATE borrows from dozens of sources -- Hitchcock, Scorsese, the Coen brothers and just about every master of the genre, past or present.

CHOCOLATE also reminds you of Vijay Anand's classic JEWEL THIEF [Ashok Kumar, Dev Anand, Vyjayantimala, Tanuja] in terms of narrating the story. The story is told in two different time frames: In the present and looking back at the events. Also, the persons attempting to put the missing links in CHOCOLATE are con men themselves, its similar to Ashok Kumars character in JEWEL THIEF.

An interesting concept without doubt and debutante director Vivek Agnihotri presents the tale stylishly. But somewhere down the line, you realize that the screenplay couldve been far more absorbing. Also, unlike JEWEL THIEF, the goings-on fail to involve you in the proceedings and you tend to get confused when the story moves back and forth every 15 minutes.

Clearly, CHOCOLATE falls short of expectations. Its a case of body beautiful, minus soul!

Christmas Eve, London. While the snow-clad city gets ready to celebrate the festival, a series of bizarre incidents shatter the Christmas calm. Two luckless Indians [Irrfan Khan, Tanushree Dutta] find themselves hauled by the London police.

Eminent lawyer Krish [Anil Kapoor] steps in at this juncture and decides to put up a legal fight to safeguard the rights of the Indians. He tries to peel off layer after layer, not realizing that the truth is something else. He realizes it only towards the end, but its too late by then.

CHOCOLATE is about seven characters primarily:

    • Krish [Anil Kapoor] is a sharp and egotistical lawyer who has unmatched legal skills.

    • Rocker [Suniel Shetty] is an obsessed lover, wanting to marry Sim.

    • Pipi [Irrfan Khan] is a soulful thinker who prefers to tread the right path.

    • Tubby [Arshad Warsi] is a happy go lucky guy.

    • Sim [Tanushree Dutta] is a temptress.

    • Devaa [Emran Hashmi] is a passionate musician.

    • Monsoon [Sushma Reddy] is an associate of Krish.

A suspense thriller ought to involve you from the word Go, but CHOCOLATE does that half-heartedly. With an interesting premise on hand, the debutante director couldve come up with a fare that wouldve kept you on tenterhooks for the next two hours. The script couldve done with ample twists and turns, sub-plots that move in a serpentine fashion and most importantly, less talk and more action.

Agnihotri succeeds in keeping the suspense alive till the very end, but the incidents laced in the drama are not as impactful. Yes, a number of sub-plots do grab your attention. For instance, the Afghanis past and the heist from a moving van. Also, making Sim look one mysterious woman works to an extent. You actually start wondering what this girl is up to and is she really taking Rocker for a ride? Surely, CHOCOLATE keeps increasing your curiosity levels at these points.

But the narrative gets too verbose and talk-heavy and thats its biggest undoing. Dialogue-baazi is fine as long as you support it with interesting twists and turns. In CHOCOLATE, the screenplay tends to make the viewer confused, especially the reasons that prompt the five members to commit one crime after another. Also, the climax, even though it takes you by surprise, will not appeal to the aam janta.

Director Vivek Agnihotri knows the power of technique and theres no denying that CHOCOLATE is a refined product. The execution of a few sequences deserves good marks, but Agnihotri is saddled by a script that the average Indian cinegoer wouldnt comprehend at all.

For any story to succeed, and if the story involves a number of characters, it ought to be told with utmost simplicity, even if you garnish it with snazzy camera movements. Besides, the story ought to have the power to keep you hooked right till the finale. CHOCOLATE appeals in bits and spurts, not in totality!

Preetams music is a plus factor. Halka Halka Sa Yeh Sama, Mummy and Jhuki Jhuki are tracks that have already attained popularity and they have been placed at the right places in the narrative. The picturization of the last two tracks is quite erotic. Khalish is well worded, but how one wishes the song-situation wouldve been appropriate.

Cinematography [Attar Singh Saini] is splendid. The winter look of London has been captured with lan. The film bears a rich look throughout and the producers [Ragini, Vibha] have spared no expenses in realizing the dream they mayve envisioned at the outset!

CHOCOLATE has a plethora of characters, but three names get more prominence than the rest: Anil Kapoor, Irrfan Khan and Tanushree Dutta.

Anil is in his element, though not as brilliant as in MY WIFES MURDER. Irrfan is terrific, especially in sequences with Anil. A particular sequence that needs to be mentioned here is that of Irrfan talking about the September 11 attack on the U.S. Tanushree looks every inch a seductress. The actor was plain average in her first release [AASHIQ BANAYA AAPNE], but is excellent here. She looks alluring as well!

Suniel Shetty puts in a sincere effort. Arshad Warsi and Emraan Hashmi, competent actors both, are sidelined completely. Sushma Reddy is cute, but doesnt have much to do.

On the whole, CHOCOLATE is body beautiful, minus soul. At the box-office, its a film that may not appeal to the aam Indian junta. Disappointing!

    Download Dosti Songs

Dosti: Friends Forever is a 2005 Hindi-Urdu romance film directed by Suneel Darshan and starring Akshay Kumar, Bobby Deol, Lara Dutta and Kareena Kapoor.

    Review

Right from DOSTI to DOST to YAARANA to SHOLAY to DIL CHAHTA HAI, male bonding has been explored time and again in Hindi films. Suneel Darshan's DOSTI - FRIENDS FOREVER treads a similar path. Armed with an attractive star cast and dollops of emotions, DOSTI - FRIENDS FOREVER could've been an old wine packaged in a new bottle. Thankfully, it is not!

Although DOSTI - FRIENDS FOREVER may seem like a film that has been attempted time and again, what makes it special is the twist in the story fifteen minutes before the intermission. From then on, things only get better.

However, DOSTI - FRIENDS FOREVER tends to follow a predictable path at times. It gets into the ANAND / KAL HO NAA HO mould in the second hour and that's why the narrative seems repetitive. But Suneel Darshan's soaked-in-Indian emotions camouflage the defects.

To sum up, DOSTI - FRIENDS FOREVER isn't a classic or path-breaking cinema by any standard, but here's a film that delivers what it promises: Unadulterated Bollywood entertainment.

They had nothing in common. Karan [Bobby Deol] was wealthy and a mansion was his habitat. Raj [Akshay Kumar], an orphan, had empty pockets and the sky was his roof.

Karan's jet ensured that he could fly if he wanted. Raj could only depend on his two feet. Karan had a family [Kiran Kumar, Lilette Dubey] and yet craved for love. Raj had love to share, but craved for a family.

Karan was the eternal casanova. Raj was the proverbial one-woman man. Karan had it all, and yet felt empty. Raj had nothing, but his heart was full.

They were two people as different as can be. Yet they found a common ground. One that led to the glorious road of friendship. Their bond was unshakable.

If Karan gave Raj a home and all the material comforts, Raj gave Karan a shoulder and all the emotional security. If Karan supported Raj at every step, Raj covered up for all of Karan's misdoings. They laughed together, lied together, loved together and fought the odds together all in the name of friendship.

Their blind faith in each other was the envy of the world. But it was this very world that never let them forget that their's was not a relationship of equals. And how long could an unequal relationship sustain?

Karan and Raj defied conventions proving that true friendship was above all such trivialities. But like a bolt out of the blue came a raging storm that threatened to sink the ship that housed the sentiments of the two friends.

DOSTI - FRIENDS FOREVER boasts of a story that moviegoers may have witnessed since time immemorial. The rich guy-poor guy dosti is beaten to death in Bollywood. The stories could be the same, but their interpretation is what makes the difference. That's precisely why DOSTI - FRIENDS FOREVER works.

Suneel Darshan opens the cards at the very outset. The dosti is established in the first ten minutes itself. Thereafter, the bachpan ke dost grow up and sing, dance, laugh and lie together everything is explained in the most predictable fashion. Frankly, there's not much novelty in the first half-an-hour of the enterprise.

Romance, fun n frolic and mandatory songs is what you get to see till something drastic happens fifteen minutes before the intermission. The viewer, who is now watching the goings-on without much interest, suddenly straightens his position to see the dramatic change of events.

The twist in the tale -- Shakti Kapoor arriving at Mahesh Thakur's [Kareena's brother] residence and what follows is a heated confrontation, after which Akshay slaps Mahesh Thakur -- is a terrific moment in the story. From the writing as well as execution point of view, it is this sequence that proves to be a good turning point.

The post-interval portions have more to offer. The sequence at the airport -- when Akshay and Bobby are about to part ways and Bobby notices something -- is another twist that catches you by surprise. A few minutes later, Kareena's marriage to someone else is another shocker that only enhances your opinion about the film.

The pace drops intermittently. The song on Bobby and Lara after their patch up can easily be deleted since it only acts as a speed breaker. Even otherwise, the song is very thanda and sets in boredom, so why not come to the point straightaway? Also, Akshay trying to smoothen things, first with Bobby's mother and then Lara, then Bobby saving his errant sister in a night club, then Akshay bumping into Kareena in a caf shop well, they are all been-there-seen-that kind of situations that dilute the impact. The writers could've been more imaginative here!

Nevertheless, the film picks up again as Bobby weds Lara. The drama in the song, which continues right till the end, is quite engaging. The climax is emotional and would strike a chord with the families for sure.

Director Suneel Darshan may've opted for an age-old story, but his handling of the emotional and dramatic moments in the film deserves to be lauded. In fact, the confrontation between Akshay and Mahesh Thakur first and between Akshay and Bobby thereafter proves that Suneel knows the pulse of Indian family audiences.

Nadeem-Shravan's music is in sync with the mood of the film. 'Dulhaniya', 'Boogie Woogie' and 'Aisa Koi Zindagi Mein Aaye' are the best of the lot. 'Ishq Na Ishq Ho Kisi Se' [reminds you of 'Dulhe Ka Sehra Suhana Lagta Hain'] is a lyrical gem and the drama in the song is fascinating. Cinematography [W.B. Rao] is eye-catching. The screenplay [Robin Bhatt, Shyam Goel] is full of pleasant surprises in the form of twists and turns, while the dialogues [Rumi Jaffrey, K.K. Singh] are wonderful.

Akshay Kumar is sure to walk away with laurels yet again. The actor has a serious role this time, but he handles it like a complete veteran. His contribution to the film, in the second hour especially, is noteworthy. Bobby Deol is first-rate, delivering a dependable performance yet again. Only thing, he needs to keep a check on is his styling and appearance.

The leading ladies don't have much to do in the enterprise, yet Kareena Kapoor excels in the two sequences that give her ample scope to display histrionics. Lara Dutta is only there to add to the glamour quotient. Juhi Chawla is appealing in a brief role. Kiran Kumar is as usual. Lilette Dubey is incredible. Karishma Tanna and Mona Chopra are passable. Mahesh Thakur is efficient. Shakti Kapoor and Aman Verma get no scope.

On the whole, DOSTI - FRIENDS FOREVER is a well made film that has some powerful emotional sequences as its ace. At the box-office, the combo of an attractive face-value and rich emotional appeal, besides popular music, will appeal to the family audiences mainly.

    Box-Office:

In India, the film did below average business. But in the UK, the film was a blockbuster. It was such a surprise from a film that was expected to do average, but not so well. It turned out to be the highest grosser of Bollywood in 2005 in the UK. It grossed around £888,000!

Dus is an Indian movie, released on July 8th, 2005. It stars Sanjay Dutt, Sunil Shetty, Abhishek Bachchan, Shilpa Shetty, Zayed Khan, Esha Deol and Dia Mirza.

    Synopsis

The movie opens with Siddhant Dheer (Sanjay Dutt) as the head of the Anti-Terrorist Cell (a fictitious organisation) uncovering the fact that on May the 10th ('10' in Hindi is 'Dus'), a terrorist attack will take place that will kill 25,000 people. All that is known about the attack is the name of the man behind it: "Jambhal".

Neha (Esha Deol), an agent in Canada, reports to him that one of Jambhal's men, Himat Mehendi, is in a Canadian jail. Siddhant's younger brother Shashank Dheer (Abhishek Bachchan) and co-agent Aditya Singh (Zayed Khan) are sent to kidnap and interrogate Mehendi, keeping the mission unofficial and secret from the Canadian authorities. But things become even more complicated when Siddhant finds that there is an unknown double agent in their midst which forces him to suspect Aditi Kumar (Shilpa Shetty) his love interest and co-agent.

On arrival in Canada, Shashank and Aditya find that the car that had been provided by Neha is rigged to explode if they slow down. A Canadian police officer Dan (Sunil Shetty) chases them apparently unaware that Shashank is driving beyond the permissible speed limit to avoid explosion. After Mehendi (Pankaj Kapoor) is captured, the agents are intercepted by Dan again on a deserted culvert. Here the terrorists attempt to recapture him; Shashank and Aditya fight them off. Dan is caught in the crossfire. Despite their misgivings about blowing their cover, the agents take him to Neha's safehouse. After recovering, Dan joins them.

Himat lead them to a man named Asif, who he claims has turned against Jambhal, along with a man named Irfan. Asif gives them Jhambal's location, and then immediately shoots himself. which Himat says is because of his fear of J.D. Dan and the agents then kill 'Jhambal' in the countryside, and release Mehendi.

All is not as it seems, however. Returning to Neha's safehouse, they find only Siddhant and a body Siddhant claims is Neha's, but is not that of the 'Neha' previously seen. It becomes apparent that the woman they thought to be Neha is a double agent, and the real Neha is dead. Moreover, the man they killed was not J.D, but Irfan, the second traitor. The real 'Jhambal' was Mehendi, and is now free. In fact Neha had rigged the car in the beginning in order to terminate Shashank and Aditya. When she failed she had covered saying that it was a test.

Siddhant also knows that the name of the mission is 'JEET'. He believes that the letters in 'Jeet' refer to their numerical position in the alphabet: 10th, 5th, 5th and 20th respectively. He knows that 10/5 refers to the 10th of May, and believes that the second 5 refers to 5pm, the time of the attack. From that the surmise that the final '20' refers to the 20,000 that will be killed; the only place where such a crowd will be concentrated at that time is a special exhibition football match between India and Canada, with the Prime Minister of India present.

At the stadium, Aditya finds 10 C-4 bombs in a car with the registration 2020. He drives off, attempting to get the car as far as possible from civilization. Shashank finds another bomb and, realising there is not enough time to drive it into the countryside, he takes it to the airport. He meets the double agent Neha, and, after he kills her bodyguards, they both confess their love for each other, pack the bomb onto an aeroplane and take off.

Aditya manages to bring the bomb into the wilderness, escapes from the car onto a helicopter, and the bomb explodes without loss of life. Shashank, however, is unable to find a place to drop the bomb safely, and crashes the plane into a lake, killing himself and Neha. Siddhant confronts an unarmed J.D. in a hotel elevator and shoots the terrorist down, but he is forever shaken by the death of his brother. The film went on to become a huge hit despite the competition from many other films releasing around that time.

    Cast

    • Sanjay Dutt ... Siddanth Dheer
    • Sunil Shetty ... Danish aka Dan
    • Abhishek Bachchan ... Shashank Dheer
    • Zayed Khan ... Aditya
    • Shilpa Shetty ... Aditi

    Download Ek Ajnabee Songs

    Review

In the 1970s and 1980s, the Big B swept the Indian box-office like a hurricane. A number of intense and action roles later, the Big B attained the tag of an 'angry young man'. Times changed, family dramas and love stories took precedence Action took a backseat and so did Bachchan's angry man roles.

Post MOHABBATEIN, Bachchan acted in films that were a far cry from the action-filled masala fares he lent his name to in his prime. However, his current outing, Apoorva Lakhia's EK AJNABEE, sees the actor donning the garb that fitted him so beautifully at a point of time. EK AJNABEE works for this very reason!

Although the film has its share of deficiencies -- it loses balance in the post-interval portions -- it appeals primarily because Bachchan gets our juices running. Besides, Lakhia and his team of writers have juxtaposed drama and bloodbath in an enterprise that grips you completely in the first hour, but the hold loosens [slightly] in the subsequent hour.

The script isn't faulty as such, but the film veers into clich-ridden situations after its exciting midpoint kidnapping. The twists and turns in the second half do catch you by surprise, but the execution of those sequences is so Hollywood-like that the Indian moviegoer wouldn't find them as impactful. Also -- this is important -- Lakhia seems to have concentrated more on frames and visuals that it often overpowers the material.

Yet, all said and done, EK AJNABEE isn't path-breaking in any respect, but the magic weaved by Bachchan camouflages the defects to a great extent. The film only confirms, yet again, that Big B's charismatic and mesmeric presence alone is worth the price of the ticket.

Suryaveer Singh [Amitabh Bachchan] was a former commando in the army. Fighting many a battle had taken a toll, so he decides to quit and seeks refuge in drinking.

Shekhar [Arjun Rampal], who used to work with him, invites Suryaveer to Bangkok where he owns a security firm. In order to get his life back in order, Shekhar gives Suryaveer a job as a bodyguard.

Suryaveer accepts it, only to find out that it is to protect an 8-year-old girl Anamika [Baby Rucha Vaidya], the only daughter of a tycoon couple [Vikram Chatwal, Perizaad Zorabian]. Somehow, slowly and steadily, Suryaveer forms a bond with her as she gives his life a new meaning.

But his life takes a traumatic turn when Anamika is kidnapped and shot dead subsequently by the chief kidnapper [Raj Zutshi]. A heartbroken Suryaveer swears revenge and starts zeroing on the kidnappers. But what unravels takes him by surprise...

EK AJNABEE seeks its basic inspiration from the Hollywood film MAN ON FIRE [2004; Denzel Washington, Dakota Fanning], but director Apoorva Lakhia has Indianized the plot in such a manner that the basic plot is very identifiable. If APAHARAN [released last week] looked at kidnappings from a small-town issue, in EK AJNABEE it's very urban and those living in metropolis would identify with the goings-on. However, the kidnapping in EK AJNABEE is just a crucial point, for the film turns into a revenge fare before the intermission itself.

The first half is well built and the bonding between Bachchan and Rucha is amongst the most watchable aspects of the enterprise. Lakhia treats those sequences delicately and the impact that the sequences create establish a strong ground for the drama that is to follow. The sequence between Bachchan and Perizaad, when the latter walks out in a huff, or the one on the dinner table when Rucha enquires, amongst other things, about the P.M. of India, or the swimming sessions lift the film to an all-time high.

The kidnap sequence is brilliantly executed as well, it leaves you spellbound. Even the subsequent portions -- when the family is completely distraught -- only add to the impact of a razor-sharp first hour. So far, so good!

But the pace slackens considerably in the post-interval portions. Bachchan's decision to pick up leads to get to the rock-bottom of the issue could've been explained in a simplistic manner. Starting with Denzil Smith to Aditya Lakhia to Akhilendra Mishra to Yuth [the Thai actor who plays the role of Chang] to the 'Boss' [Raj Zutshi], the sequence of events that lead to the chase isn't riveting enough from the writing point of view.

Even when another face is unmasked in the climax [the suspense is withheld for readers!] -- the main conspirator -- it does catch you by surprise, but one only wishes that the explanations were done far more convincingly.

When compared to his directorial debut MUMBAI SE AAYA MERA DOST, Apoorva Lakhia takes giant strides as a storyteller. But he is letdown, to an extent, by the writing [in the post-interval portions], which could've been tighter. Technically speaking, EK AJNABEE is one of the most stylish pro
